Just an absolute masterpiece.

Beginning to end, this is a perfect album. Easily my favourite metal record. It's also a nearly unfathomable step up from everything that came before it.

The songwriting is phenomenal, both when its heavy and when it's melodic. Akerfeldt's singing sounds far better than it ever has before, and in addition the structure of the vocals is stronger. On previous albums the lyrics are sparse, and sometimes seem almost added as an afterthought. Here the ... read more

Admittedly I'm not particularly familiar with Judas Priest. I've of course heard songs like Painkiller and Breaking the Law etc
But I like to fill in my gaps, so I'm doing a deep dive and starting at the top.

This was quite unexpected, and I understand that it took them a couple goes to consolidate their classic sound, but I still enjoyed this one.

In particular I thought Run of the Mill was very very good. In general I really liked hearing the different facets to ... read more

This is a straight up masterpiece, but I gotta ask: Why did Chuck wait until the last track on his last album to bust out the wailing clean vocals? They're SO FUCKING GOOD.

Like for real, this cover of Painkiller might be the greatest metal song ever?

Also I'd love to visit the universe where Gene Hoglan stuck around for this album. Richard Christy is of course a great musician in his own right, but I massively prefer Hoglan's sensibilities.

I always thought that 80's extreme metal was just not for me. Sure I liked other early metal like Iron Maiden etc. But I've always detested Slayer, and Anthrax never really grabbed me. For some reason I'd looked at the Death logo and just made up my mind that this was more Slayer stuff. Boy howdy was I wrong!

Ok now we're cooking.
Big step up from everything that came before. Having the Martin's involved in the writing process clearly helped elevate things. And excitingly, the guitar tones are neeearly there.

Akerfeldt's sense of melody isn't quite where it will be, but this is still an immensely satisfying records.

Seven tracks and really all of them are very good. The final three tracks are the strongest for me, Benighted at track three though is stunning also.
