Boards of Canada somehow manages to create an album that is derivative of their own work. This is just a lesser version of some of their older work, with even worse drum programming. It's so boring and repetitive, and I like ambient music. Not understanding the hype on this one.
Me, listening to the first track: Wow this is pretty good, sounds fresh. Can't wait to hear the rest!
Me, listening to the second track: Goddammit hyperpop-esque vocals ruin EVERYTHING
If there is a single fad that cannot dissappear soon enough it's the overproduced, high-pitched, nasal sounding hyperpop vocals. Bonus points if the rapping is 95% sloppy sounding triplets.
Production is good, vocals and rapping are ass. Too bad.
Last years’ Mercy made me question if maybe I’m getting too old for all this cryptic and poetic stuff. Maybe it’s time for me to move on to simpler pastures. This album has proven to me that if you pair E L U C I D (or billy woods, for that matter) with beats that are interesting and non-formulaic, their stuff is still pretty badass.
