Swans - Greed

Greed is a change from the pure-violence-beats Filth and Cop thrive and thrive less on, respectively. While this is still quite a lot to take considering the roughness of the whole project, it's fleshed out to a much better direction than what the transition between the two aforementioned albums was. While the sound is there, Greed has a rather notable lack of more interesting concepts within the music even if the vocals start showcasing off rather nicely what Gira is able to work with. Cop continues with the general ideas of Filth but loses a lot of the formed identity while sounding rather mundane to its counterpart. Does this stand on its own? Sure, but when you know of better (even if you were to only be familiar with Filth), the overall experience feels less valuable. It's rough, it's abrasive and it's a bit boring in my opinion. I did not really get too much out of this album even if there are memorable moments and lines. Found this album through my parents who visited one of VNV Nation's concerts a while back. While I have a bit of a hard time when it comes to properly figuring out if I like this project wholeheartedly, there are still a lot of enjoyable qualities within this album. The relentless yet somewhat creative synthwave/EDM style along with the lyrical content really brings out something neat. VNV Nation is undoubtedly at their strongest while they are able to mix the two sides properly and I think ... read more

Overall a very nice record where most of the, admittedly, less notable songs get blown out of the water by the incredible opener Race For The Price. While the aforementioned track is excellent nonetheless, there are still a bunch of other fun and interesting songs that one should explore while listening to the album. From the unique-sounding transitions on A Spoonful Weighs A Ton to the interesting progression of The Spark That Bled, the album does hit you with all kinds of treats to lose your ... read more
