Permutation is everything I like about Bricolage refined and expanded upon. Amon Tobin really is the Nu Jazz GOAT
Baby's first Machine Girl album
Insanely derivative, truly no personality to be found. As much as I don't like Femtanyl's early music, at least it had something that made it stand out.
That being said, I still like Machine Girl, and I certainly don't think this is unlistenable at all.
The feature selection is top notch; Mac Miller, Tame Impala, A$ap Rocky, even little Yachty have by far the most interesting parts on this album.
All the solo material is just the same music thundercat has been making for the past 8 years. He doesn't have any other gimmick aside from the high pitch singing voice and the quirk chungus humor, which I found endearing on Drunk but find mildly irritating on Distracted. The beats are all super well produced, but Thundercat does the exact same ... read more
I've never listened to Gorillaz but it just sounds like AJR with better writing.
I respect the concept of the album and actually like the spotlight on indian soundscapes while also finding the stuff unique to Gorillaz to be borderline unlistenable. The vocals have this awful filter the whole album and the singing itself is underwhelming at best. The rap is so out of place while admittedly having some pretty good verses. Most of the sound palate is horrifically cringey and disney esque ... read more
He's got a great voice and good production ideas but he simply wears them thin.
This is the only guy I've listened to who makes 3 minutes feel like 10.
This is the most overstimulated I've ever been listening to music, actual peak
This tracklist is wildly unbalanced, but the good parts are stuff that'll stay with you long after you've stopped listening.
Despite my personal distaste for this new genre of "breakcore" (that's really just atmospheric drum and bass) this album has some excellent moments throughout.
My Red Hot Car is such a misleading intro to this album lmao this shit would kill Victorian era peasants.
This album does not do enough to differentiate itself from his previous work. It feels like an amalgamation of his past 2 albums without any sort of meaningful evolution, especially Lady Moon which is quite literally Venger 2.0 and not nearly as good.
I love Lustful Sacraments and enjoy the Uncanny Valley but I would much rather have had a totally new direction musically then what we got here.
Art of War fucks though.
UPDATE: Carpenter Brut is confirmed (via discord and his close associates) not using AI in any other of his music videos for the rollout of this album.
The use of generative AI in the music video feels like such a stab in the back and takes away from the otherwise decent Carpenter Brut song.
