The great Zack de la Rocha once warned the people at the turn of the 20th century to not “sleep now in the fire”. Unfortunately, that is what a majority of the American people have been doing in the modern era, musicians no exception. It has felt as if everybody is too fucking cowardly to speak on what’s really happening now. Vince Staples is one of the first that I’ve seen truly raise his fist against the orange tub of shit sitting in the White House.
And goddamn, he ... read more
Tonight, my dog of 10 years passed away. She was not in any pain. That little girl meant the entire world to me, and as I sit here with more tears than I’ve ever dropped in my entire lifetime, I suddenly think about this album.
When I was a little kid, GKMC would always blast in the car. That was my introduction to Kendrick Lamar. For that, the album gives me so much nostalgia, but also a lot of remembering of that dog I love so much. Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst will forever ... read more
Three for three for Vince Staples. Yeah he’s dropping AOTY and it’s not a fucking question.
A lot of people have different answers to what Hip-Hop really is. Is it pop? The lyricism? The instrumentals? To me, this little mixtape precisely presents what hip-hop really is.
Fresh bars, perfect beats and a level of aggression and confidence that we’ve rarely seen since this came out. This is one of the biggest classics of the generation and one that we will look upon and admire for many years to come - Joey Bad really was something else back then.
Gangsta Gibbs dropping a new EP out of nowhere?? Hell fucking yeah!!!
These songs are genuinely amazing. Freddie Gibbs sounds even fresher than ever before here….man this guy is truly something special. Another unstoppably consistent group of tracks from one of the greatest rappers of all time.
Rereview - I have a lot more to say about this insane album.
I’ve realized now that I’m probably the only one who stands with this album, but I could care less. This is the Cherry Bomb of Peggy’s career.
Experimental Rap is ultimately a parody of itself; the name definitely enscapulates that. But even with virtually no seriousness present anywhere in the album, JPEGMAFIA aims to make it clear once and for all that he is THAT fucking guy. People don’t wanna admit it, ... read more
Yeah, you got me Vince. You got me. This album is gonna be one of the best of this generation.
To this very day, Denzel Curry is the only artist to me that has successfully made a good trap album, and can call himself a good trap artist. TA13OO is very likely the only album I will ever truly love in this genre, but I cherish it greatly. An absolutely phenomenal album from Zel.
After an extraordinary debut album, Cunninlynguists continue the greatest discography in hip-hop history, now joined by Mr. SOS. Mr. SOS would only be in the group for this one album, but his time here is amazing.
Cunninlynguists hadn’t adjusted to the sound that they’re known best for yet, as there are significantly faster verses and more shaped in classic Hip-Hop form, but even then the album is literally perfect, as is everything else this crazy group ever made. This shit is ... read more
Let God Sort Em Out fucking rocks. A best album coming from a duo as notorious as Clipse 24 years after their debut is unfathomably rare, something I’ve only seen happen with the Tribe with their final album.
This album is *STACKED* with features, man. Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, Pharrel Williams and Nas are only a few that guest on the record, and they all do extraordinary. Wild shit.
Let God Sort Em Out only released a year ago, but its release already gives me a lot of ... read more
Aaand here it is! The most anticipated album of the year by the big Drizzy himself. It sucks? Who could have seen that coming???
I’ve had it up to here of people trying to defend this pussycat of a man and his reign of terror on the radio station. 2 years later and you’re still mentioning the Kendrick beef, enough is enough.
I’ve always wondered why music has seemed so much more dull this decade, now I understand: it’s because of Drake. Let’s compare to the ... read more
In the more than 50 years that Hip-Hop as a genre has existed, one thing has been certain in its form; in the art of MCing, the vocal delivery of lyrics over a beat. The best of the genre has set a standard that sharp lyricism and expert wordplay is a must when creating a track in this form. J Dilla completely throws away those rules in favor of making some of the most beautiful and genuinely impressive beats ever recorded.
Questlove, drummer and co-founder of the Roots, said that Dilla played ... read more
This is one of those albums that would have been perfect no matter what direction they took with it. Two legendary artists known infamously for their crazy sound coming together is a match made in heaven. To the surprise of no one, Scaring the Hoes is one of the most fun and interesting albums of the decade by far, and one of the best experimental rap records ever made. It truthfully can’t get much better than this. Be warned, though: Once you listen to Scaring the Hoes, no woman will ... read more
This is where it all began: Two boys right in the middle of the South’s uprise as a major player in Hip-Hop. Even as only a duo, and not so matured, CunninLynguists show just how damn good they are right from the beginning.
Production is the most important aspect of any song. Plunderphonics takes that rule and cranks it up to the max, as an entirely unique art form in of itself. This makes the genre one of the best to listen to and one of my favorites. Since I Left You is at the top of the greatest sampledelia hip-hop, which says a hell of a lot.
Years of extraordinary releases from the Hieroglyphics collective reached the summit in Deltron 3030, one of the greatest rapper-producer duo albums right up there with Madvillainy and Pinata.
The impact that Del the Funky Homosapien has had on west coast hip-hop and the underground is unmistakable. He created the Hieroglyphics, a mega collective consisting of some of the best underground artists of all time, as well as releasing 3 extraordinary solo albums in a row. After a legendary run ... read more
I’m very divided on this album. On one half there’s She and Yonkers, some of Tyler’s best tracks in his career. On the other hand, the rest of the album sounds like a man on crack who’s never made a beat before. Even then, it’s still better than anything Drake or Playboi Carti ever made in their careers.
