JPEGMAFIA quite possibly claims the title of my album of the year for the second year in a row, even topping the already insanely entertaining and enjoyable Veteran in my eyes (or, ears) as Peggy busts out even glitchier, more frantic production and more aggressive, animated deliveries.
It opens with lead single “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot”, which opens with appropriately heavenly, retro, ‘80s-esque synths over churning, stiff percussion and Peggy commanding the listener ... read more
For his third album in a row, Lil Skies continues to operate below even mediocrity, and the issues with his music are more apparent than ever.
For one, his usually boyish delivery makes him sound incredibly foolish on the multiple occasions on Unbothered on which he attempts to sound tough. An especially bad example of this is the song “Ok,” whose sparse instrumental reveals just how simplistic and unthreatening Lil Skies really sounds. There’s also “Riot,” which, ... read more
On his debut tape, rapper Brokeasf, who gained notoriety for his minor TikTok hit “Comments,” does NLE Choppa’s shtick better than NLE Choppa himself can.
WRONG 1 starts off on a bad note, though, with the song “The People’s President.” The mix on this song is one of the roughest on the tape, with 808s and percussion impacts that seem to be loud simply for the sake of being loud. There are a few other notable duds within the tracklist, namely “Burnt ... read more
BRS Kash’s debut album is a collection of mostly sexual, club bangers that are hit-or-miss.
On the album, Kash tries out a few different styles, but the horny, ass-shaking club anthems really take the cake. For example, “Kash App” has an instrumental full of fast-paced, rattling percussion, Miami Bass-influenced percs, deflating horn hits, and a tense piano countermelody. Over that, Kash rapidly raps a catchy chorus and verse in which he repeatedly requests to see a ... read more
On Astrokidjay’s Wizard Boy, some technical problems, a static, uninspired delivery, and boring performances make for a mediocre mixtape.
First of all, the volume normalization on the tape is all out of whack. I can comfortably play the first two songs at max volume, but then the subsequent pair is a bit quiet. However, after that, “Forget” is much louder, and I have to turn the volume down in order to not get my eardrums blown out. At last, the following three songs return ... read more
Alycia Bell’s debut album Muse is a stunning collection of slow, introspective, and heartbroken R&B.
However, the album does start out on a bit of a boring note with its opener “Cue The Sun.” I do like the soft piano and quiet strings in the background, but after the thirty second mark, the song takes an abrupt and lengthy pause that really brings me out of it. Also, Boogie’s nasally attempts at singing after the sudden beat switch are hard to listen to.
The second ... read more
