SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
100

Holy Shit.

Finally getting to this album and since I added it to my spin list I had forgotten why I was interested to begin with. I didn't even bother checking the genres or anything so I went in completely blind, which is... definitely an experience. I have no words to describe this album aside from the buzzwords I'm sure everyone else has used. Listening to this album while reading the comments and seeing the mvs all at once is borderline transcendental, and seeing the impact ... read more

Wednesday - Bleeds
60

Not bad by any means, but unfortunately most of it felt like less interesting versions of things I've heard before.

Knocked Loose - A Different Shade of Blue
60

A couple songs stuck out to me but a lot of it blended together and sounded like stuff I've already heard a lot of, even as someone who hasn't explored metalcore much. I'd like to visit this again at some point as I found a lot of the lyrics very interesting, and I'll definitely check out some more of Knocked Loose's stuff sometime.

Wunderhorse - Cub
95

Can't remember why or how this ended up on my spin list but I'm glad I gave it a go. Genuinely shocked to realise this is from 2022 as it feels like all the best of the late 90s/early 2000s indie music scene. The entire album is melancholic and intense, with the instrumental being more stripped back and serving to emphasise the artistry of the lyrics, which I find to be refreshingly vulnerable and earnest amidst a modern music scene in which honesty and self reflection is often ... read more

Tom Waits - Alice

Never listened to Tom Waits before so I had no idea what to expect going into this. I will say, the gravelly, painful sounding voice did put me off at first, though the further I got through the album the more it grew on me and started to make sense.

I think this'll be an album I enjoy much more the next time I hear it, which is something I very much look forward to.

Jameszoo & Metropole Orkest & Jules Buckley - Melkweg
90

I've always been biased against instrumental pieces, assuming that I wouldn't like them or that the lack of lyrics or vocals inherently makes them less interesting- even though I never really gave them a chance.

In the past, the only instrumental projects I had heard (aside from when I'd play video games and kind of half-mindedly thought about how nice the sound design was) have been tiny glitchpop & breakcore projects on bandcamp recommended to me by a friend; and while I ... read more

Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear

Beautiful album, excited to hear more from this artist.

They Might Be Giants - Flood
80

Coming into this off the back of Glass Animals' "How To Be a Human Being" is an...interesting experience to say the least.

Obligatory bias clarification: my history with this band is sporadically hearing "Istanbul (Not Constanstinople)" and occasionally thinking about the fact I should listen to this band and then never doing it...until now!

Had no clue what to expect going into this but the opening track "Theme From Flood" is a really interesting start to ... read more

Glass Animals - How to Be a Human Being
80

Listened to this a couple years back before I got "into" music and didn't really pay attention the first time around- coming back to it now I'm able to appreciate much more how interesting and diverse this album is sonically.

Maybe eventually I'll come back to it and explore the lyrics more and how they connect to each character on the cover. Either way, I look forward to forgetting I put this on my massive frankenstein's monster of a playlist and being ... read more
