Punk playlist starter pack. Youth Brigade > Government Issue > Teen Idles > S.O.A imo
Great! Would deffo send this the way of a green behind the beers punk fan looking for an easy listen of the early stuff.
Not much to say about it, it's fun but not sure I can call it a solid record whatever that means. It's kinda cute if that makes sense? Like a garage band imitating their heroes, not at all a bad thing. Throw "Lost In Space" and "Riot" on any punk playlists you have those are the standouts imo.
Punk music. Kind of wish the whole thing sounded like the final track "Too Young To Rock", would've made it stand out more.
You'll only see this as truly great if you're like me who fits in the band's niche target audience. Said niche is Mega Man superfan who likes demo sounding music with heart. If you don't fit in this niche you can still get a lot out of this album as a standalone cyberpunk rock opera concept album, specifically tracks 3-6 might appeal to you.
This is a ton of fun to listen through. there are some duds imo as i didn't care much for Rock 'n' Roll or With You, Friends. I also wasn't a fan of the remixes either but those are bonuses to the MEAT of the EP and the MEEAAT is gooooood.
Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis is a beautifully tragic tale that made me feel something.
I feel like my rating is a tad bit generous but I wouldn't feel right rating it lower because I did enjoy this album. There are (in my opinion) good songs here but under a pile of filler. If this was an EP with just the best songs it'd be a lot better.
Heard this album a long time ago because it was free on itunes so i decided to relisten and give it a rate. Your Petty Pretty Things was my personal fav back then and that remains true now. Keith Case is a bit of a low point sadly because it has potential to be better, its just too long for what it is. Tommy Gentle is a track that feels the most "Get Up Kids" out of all the tracks at least in my incorrect opinion. How You're Bound takes goes a similar experimental route to Keith ... read more
I wonder how this album would've turned out if it was finished. Jeremy mentioned in an interview that since the band had essentially broken up most of the lyrics had to be made up on the spot. While it carries over the themes of longing and self loathing from Diary, LP2 feels like a more optimistic form of depression like a silver lining is visible despite the poor weather. This is reflected in the instrumentals as well which feel more fluttery and light.
The Dan Hoerner fronted era of Sunny Day Real Estate is very interesting to me. The sound is so different yet so similar. On these tracks you can hear a cleaned up version of the sound the band brought on the demo they put out as Empty Set. Jeremy really did complete this band there's no question there, but they were still something special before that.
Something I Learned From Zeno steals the show for me. It takes until the closing track Don't for the same highs to be reached. Unfortunately this has the side effect of making the other 4 tracks filler in comparison. They're all good if you're like me and crave demo quality recordings.
Despite my intense excitement waiting for this to come out, I could never have expected it to surpass the original. Every song is redone in the band's new faster sound and you can really hear that extra guitar going to work. Novum Vetus, the bonus track and first new music the band had put out in over a decade, kills. I love you Sunny Day Real Estate.
Lipton Witch is the "winner" here but Bad Heart is really really good as well. It's so cool to be able to hear Lipton Witch live now that Sunny Day Real Estate is back together and knowing these two bands collaborated at one point makes me geek out. On the Lipton Witch side it is the logical extension of Sunny Day Real Estate after all of the sounds they progressed through over their discography. The uplifting yet tragic sound from LP2, the artful song writing from How It Feels ... read more
It's very difficult to not rate this higher, but I'd be doing so out of nostalgia bias. In high school I listened to Seven so much that for years after I still couldn't bump it down from my most listened song on apple music. It's an AOTY must listen for a reason, get on it. If you're into emo and haven't bumped this yet you have yet to reach your final form.
This is definitely Sunny Day Real Estate's weakest album in my opinion, but that does not at all mean its bad. There are stand out tracks here like Rain Song, Disappear, Snibe, and Tearing In My Heart. I have mixed opinions on the vocal mixing on Killed by an Angel. It's a good song I can just never pin down how I feel about the vocal effects present. The band is more of a prog rock outfit this time and its not at all a bad direction, you can still hear sounds tracing back to How It ... read more
I very much liked the ideas presented through Sheet One and I'm a sucker for minimalism but this track list goes on much longer than it needs to. I didn't mind the length of Plasticity but Smak was grating to me and made me debate skipping it. Ovokx is a repeat of Smak's ending just less drawn out which was a bit confusing I could just be missing something. At the very least this album got me interested in hearing more Minimal Techno releases but the sore spots really dragged ... read more
Rail supremacy! The train sound motifs that play throughout make my brain happy, especially the ch-chg chg-chg-chg that plays consistently from Trans Europe Express to the end. Europe Endless gives a similar feeling to Autobahn from the album of the same name. I think its really cool that the album was released in both English and German and that a French version of Showroom Dummies was put out (which is actually played a little quicker and higher pitched.) though that doesn't effect my ... read more
If I had to describe Autobahn's title track I would show the cover art and say "It sounds like how this picture looks". The panning and feeling of constant forward motion made it feel like a car ride through a polished utopian highway. Despite Side A being the obvious historical and musical highlight, I personally preferred the tracks on Side B. Mitternacht stood out as my favorite with its strange almost alien aquatic noises like gnarpy dolphin fellas were swimming around ... read more
