Due to a brutal chase of bronchitis that I’m still recovering from I’m way behind on my reviews and ratings. I’ve been wondering how to put my thoughts on “LUX” into words. In many ways this is a album that defies categorization. It’s musically varied enough to not be pigeonholed into a genre yet so many of the songs have an irresistible poppy catchiness to them. Each movement could be its own separate project as they each have a singular feel of their own. ... read more
In 2015 I was lucky enough to attend the Pemberton Music Festival. It took place in a giant outdoor venue with beautiful hills surrounding me no matter where I looked. The lineup was the best lineup I’ve seen to this day and one of the artists in it was De La Soul. Their performance had a few challenges. Firstly, it was in the after hours, with the show starting at 11:30 PM, taking place after the headliner of the night. Secondly, and most importantly, none of their music was on ... read more
It’s hard to review this album without talking about my personal experiences with Danny Brown’s art. I’ve been listening to him since XXX came out and now I’m the same age Danny Brown was when he dropped that project. His music has soundtracked my most ecstatic highs and my most intensive lows. The way “Quaranta” fit perfectly into one of the hardest years of my life so too does “Stardust” speak to a new rocky stability I’ve found. The ... read more
Last Friday was a fantastic day for music and I’ll be playing catch up for a while. I just cant write reviews nearly as quickly as everyone else on this site, and I usually like to review only after at least four focused listens. I’m still writing my review for the new Rosalia album but first I wanted to review an artist who has been having an amazing late career revival.
Starting with 2010’s Jeff Tweedy produced “You’re not alone” Mavis Staples has been ... read more
Many on here might not be old enough to remember that there was a time when Miguel was mentioned in the same breath as Weeknd and Frank Ocean. He released two absolute masterpieces in the 2010s with “Kaleidoscope Dream” and “Wildheart”, the latter of which I firmly believe is his magnum opus. “War And Leisure” was a solid album as well, it just failed to live up to the quality of its predecessors. Since then Miguel has been nearly radio silent and unlike ... read more
I see this reaction with every Tame Impala album since “Currents”. When “Currents” came out people were instantly panning it for not being “Lonerism”. When “The Slow Rush” came out people had five years to let its predecessor grow on them so they began to pan it for not being “Currents”. Tame Impala’s post “Lonerism” career hasn’t been consistent in sound but it has been consistent in it’s divisiveness. ... read more
I’m surprised by the middling reception of these collaboration projects with Beatie Wolfe. For me they’ve been fantastic. I recently got lucky enough to catch a “Eno” at my local indie movie theater and my screening had Brian Eno talking about the way the importance of the seasons when it comes to his release schedule. He mentioned scrapping an entire finished project, one complete with finished music videos, due to it not fitting the season. All this to say ... read more
I see whether this is a “true” NIN album or not being a hotly debated issue already. To me that doesn’t matter. Instead what matters is how quality the music on this record is and I’m happy to report that this stands alongside “The Social Network” “Challengers” and “Bones And All” as being one of the best soundtracks they’ve ever made. NIN has been one of my favorite groups of all time for fifteen years now and this album has ... read more
With their predecessor being so perfect I feel like the expectations for this record were impossibly high. Its a beautiful record, the production is sublime and the lyrics are wonderfully poetic. I don’t get why this has the lowest rating of every Bit Thief album at the moment.
Holy shit! Why weren’t these songs on the original. A 13 minute psychedelic jazz opus with David Byrne of the talking heads featuring a rhythm section with the hypnotic quality of Fela Kuti? This is peak. The other song is great too but my god “Lockdown” is the best song Miley has ever released.
The fact that this album isn’t on streaming is why we can’t come together as a nation. The groove has been lost and we are no longer united. Check this album out, its a absolute masterpiece.
This album is amazing and is the most I’ve enjoyed a KGLW album since “Changes” which is one of my top five albums by the band. I love how the band has never sacrificed quantity for quality. Despite all the albums having a common sonic through line the band experiments enough with different genres, and switches up lyrical themes often enough that I never get bored when doing a discography run through.
After a surprisingly weak 2024, I’m glad to say Curren$y is on a roll once again and bringing light to an otherwise difficult year. His third project of 2025 exhibits that effortless charisma that is characteristic of Curren$y’s best work. I’ve been listening to Curren$y since 2012, he’s one of the few rappers who defined the datpiff era who have managed to keep their music quality not only consistent but entered a second golden age with the work he’s put out with ... read more
This for all my lonely tops out there! I’m surprised by the scores for this album, it’s a lot better than “2000” and my personal favorite Joey project since his debut studio album. I find it a lot more concise than his previous works as well with the final five tracks in particular being on constant repeat for me. The seemingly mandatory Ty Dolla Sign featuring “song for the ladies” is actually pretty good as opposed to the Chris Brown featuring atrocity on ... read more
Before starting this review I want to admit my bias. “Acid Rap” is possibly the most nostalgic project of all time for me, coming out in the pivotal summer between high school and college. “Coloring Book” and “Surf” soundtracked my college days. In fact, I still go back to these albums regularly. Honestly, people have been too harsh on Chance. “The Big Day” was an awful project, the drought afterwords didn’t help and covid hitting right ... read more
I’ve been absolutely with Pavement recently, having just heard their music for the first time a month ago. Since then I’ve gotten their five albums on LP and have been playing them constantly. What has particularly blown me away is how their first four albums are all perfect in their own way. It’s very hard for me to pick a favorite but the one I keep coming back to the most is “Wowee Zowee”. The way they branched out on this album is truly brilliant. Prior to ... read more
I feel like I’m listening to a different album than those who are calling this disappointing. I do think the standards “Forever Story” set were insanely high but I think this album comes very close to matching that album. It’s truly cohesive and has no skips. Even the more radio friendly tracks towards the middle section work well, I even like “What We On” which seems to be the most contentious song of the bunch. The album’s focus on God and religion is ... read more
