I don’t get how the score for this is so low. Then again I thought “Las Ruinas” was amazing so it seems I’m often in disagreement with the consensus on Rico’s work. This album is excellent. The run of songs in the second half of the album in particular have been on constant rotation. Her voice sounds perfect over pop punk instrumentation, a lane I always felt she would be great over ever since “Black Punk” came out. The more melodic tracks such as ... read more
Fela Kuti really deserves more love on this site. Other than “Zombie” and “Expensive Shit” most of his other masterworks aren’t talked about too much. Therefore, I’ve decided to make it my job to cover his lesser known works starting with this record.
I highly recommend this record to fans of long form improvisational numbers. Ginger Baker’s drumming plays perfectly with the tight rhythmic machine that is Africa 70. Absolutely hypnotic music that has a ... read more
By far Jeezy’s best work. The production is insane and every song bangs with no skips. I recommend this album for anyone wanting to get into Jeezy’s extensive back catalog. Given that we’re in a new recession this album hits even harder. Jeezy had the news on the whole time he was writing this work and you can tell.
Combine this album with 7-8 songs off “I Am” and you have a perfect double album. The leak of “I Am” is one of the saddest events of 90s rap. These tracks are amazing and have some of the best storytelling in Nas’ long and continually amazing record. A must listen for any fans
A rock opera in the year of our lord 2025? Sign me up! The instant I heard of a rock opera from a group that I already loved I knew I couldn’t review it till I had it on vinyl. The record comes with a beautiful twenty page booklet that is essential to the listening experience, outlining which character sings which stanzas. Also, each song comes with a short prelude that goes into which character each song is about and how the song fits into the story. If you like the album at all make ... read more
I really wish Buddy Guy had more love on this site! I decided to bury my ears deep into Buddy Guy’s discography following his role in the amazing “Sinners” I’ve heard this is one of his best albums so I decided to check it out. Oh Buddy I’m sure glad I did! This album is absolutely stellar. Some of the best guitar playing you’ll ever hear. Check out “Please Don’t Leave Me” and if that track tickles your fancy listen to the rest of the ... read more
I’m absolutely amazed by this release. This is the type of genuinely boundary pushing political rap that I haven’t heard in like 10+ years. Haven’t been this blown away by a up and coming rap artist all of the 2020s. I’ve had this album on repeat every morning. The mix of moods and genres means it’s a consistently engaging emotional rollercoaster that doesn’t die down even with repeated listens.
I see that this album is contentious and so I wanted to offer my take on it. I’m on my third listen and this my second favorite Yung Lean project after “Stranger”. I love the way that he expands on the post punk sounds of “Psykos”, which I found to be a great project that was simply overshadowed by “Cold Visions”. I can also hear the melancholic moods of “Starz” and “Poison Ivy” enveloping this album’s sonics. It’s ... read more
Despite Beach Boys being my favorite band of all time and “Smile” being my favorite album of all time I had never checked out this album. It’s status as a minor and inconsistent work between some of their best works ever just made me worry. I will say that despite this status being deserved I found the album to be an overall great listen. “Do It Again” is a fantastic opener but the cover song that follows it proves emblematic of the first side’s inconsistent ... read more
This album has been my soundtrack to all of last month since I got the record of it. It puts me in a hypnotic state where all my most melancholic moods are smoothed out into a pleasant trance. Really what more could you ask for in music?
If you had told me in 2015 that ten years from now one of the best albums of the year would be by skrillex and one of the worst would be by kanye I’d be so fucking confused.
Wow I was not expecting the scores to be in the 60s. I know its Another week another Boldy project, but this one is actually peak. Maybe people are burned out but for me this is easily his best of the year so far. The beats have me ascending constantly and remind me of his work with The Alchemist. From the very first track Boldy is hungry, recounting his tales of drug dealing with clever wordplay and captivating detail. Every song has it’s own unique vibe and the tracks never blend ... read more
I really don’t get why the reviews on this are so negative. This is significantly better than “permanent ink” in terms of Boldy james rapping over trap inspired production. Also, Boldy still has some amazing bars all over here with amazing story telling. Either way, if you don’t like this just wait a week and Boldy will release something more to your tastes.
Complete rewrite from scratch of my original review which I felt was barely a review and more of a first impression. This album is a glorious mess. Its structure reminds me of the type of projects I’d download off datpiff in the days which the mixtape distinction truly were different. Despite the length I never found myself reaching for the skip button. Even the worst songs have engaging enough production that keeps me grooving when Carti is obviously phoning in his performance. ... read more
Listened to this twice last night and I can already tell this will a daily pre-bedtime listen. After one of the most stressful days I’ve had so far this year this album perfectly managed to help me decompress. I would say this is Brian Eno’s best ambient release since 2018’s epic “Music For Installations”. If you are at all a fan of ambient music please do yourself a favor and check this album out. It works like the best of ambient music being perfect for both the ... read more
Curren$y outdoes himself yet again. I enjoyed “the tonite show” but this project feels significantly more concise with the features complimenting spitta in a much smoother way. Every time I play this album once I instantly want to hit the repeat button. Harry Fraud provides addictively smooth production as always, proving that he’s second only to the legendary alchemist as the best collaborator for spitta.
Now that I’m relistening to this album nine years older than when it came out I’m realizing “Folding Clothes” is a absolute jam. This is for sure Cole’s best overall work, the string arrangements and use of live instrumentation throughout is immaculate.
