I've listened to this album many times but whenever I think about it, I have to go back and listen again to remind myself what was on it. So much of this record ends up blurring together in a fuzzy mess. MGMT have always had a love/hate relationship with the pop roots that launched their careers, but this album marks a moment where the band is stuck in limbo. This music isn't digestable enough for larger audiences nor is it original enough to warrant attention from the rest.

I feel like the idea of this album is better than the album itself. I used to love the fusion of pop/electronic with hip-hop but all of these years later it doesn't sound nearly as compelling. It's likely that I've moved out of the target demographic since so many tracks I remember loving now seem like lifeless pop anthems with equally cringy lyrics. 'Up Up & Away' and 'Pursuit of Happiness" are the most emblematic of both these points.

It's unoriginal and repetitive, but the worst part by far is the lead singer's whiny voice. It sounds like he's trying very hard to sound like Alex Turner but only getting halfway there.
