Congratulations Zelda Lulamoon you are the first person to ever make a song I struggled to get through for a reason other than it physically hurting me (long harsh noise) or being so sucks (dax or some shit). Princess Cuckoo is amazing at making me feel wrong simply for perceiving it as a bystander even when I can identify it's just music.
Aside from that, it's easily one of the best rock albums of the 2020's and has a couple of the most mindblowing songs I've ever heard in ... read more
A phenomenal effort of modern jazz. It stands fittingly next to the other soundtracks for lazarus as well as it does Kamasi's own albums, creating a unique sound for itself through really engaging in the sound and vibe of Lazarus.
How is this not bigger given how great it is? They literally got the Scott Pilgrim OP that's gotta be worth some sort of clout.
This is an album filled with infectious melody and energy, made apparent by Fuzaketenaize and bloom's reception, being the two songs that made it off the album and into more mainstream media in the way of being openers for Girlfriend Girlfriend and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off respectively. There's not a song on this album falling short of them though, and ... read more
Tyler the Creator in peak form.
I don't think this album is like "EASILY ONE OF THE BEST OF THE 21ST CENTURY RAHH!!!" good, but it is pretty amazing. IGOR'S THEME, EARFQUAKE, NEW MAGIC WAND, A BOY IS A GUN* and GONE, GONE / THANK YOU are all some of Tyler's best output without a doubt, but there are other tracks here I don't click with as immediately even if I've come to recognize them as good.
Solace is amazing but I don't necessarily get its reception as transcendent. Maybe my issue is just that I don't like drumless songs that carry on for this long though.
Maybe the only definition flawless album.
I can point to every one of my 10/10's and pick out some minor issue. The New Sound has Bongo Season, Doppelganger has Johnny Truant, Deathconsciousness has Who Could Leave Their Son, The Black Parade has Teenagers, all are great songs, but none live up to the standards set in their respective albums. An album like EATEOT, Under Tangled Silence or ACLAM lacks the immensely sonically interesting factors of those albums at times, for the sake of ... read more
Kanye Wests other perfect album.
This is a perfect sequel to The College Dropout thematically and sonically, so it's fitting it's just as flawless. The bottom line of this album is as solid as steel, the peaks of it are some of the best rap songs ever conceived (Touch the Sky, We Major, Roses), and god damn if even the skits aren't some of the only skits on any album I'll never skip. I take it over The College Dropout personally, MBDTF lacks the consistency to match it ... read more
The best album ever.
Deathconsciousness changed my perspective on music forever and left a mark on me that few if any albums could ever near. It is a conceptual and sonic masterpiece that defines the career of a deceptively great Dan Barrett (beyond HaNL and Giles Corey he also has Black Wing, Nahvalr, Gate and In Pieces which have at least one great album apiece) as well as being the capstone of darkness within music. If anything ever surpasses it for me I'll be amazed.
This is a modern jazz classic.
Departure by Jesus Molina might even be the best modern jazz album I've heard, and it stands next to my all time favorites without a doubt. It got quite a bit of mileage off of Molina's take on Night in Tunisia, but don't let that fool you into thinking he's a one trick pony. Each track on this album is spotless. The band dances between tunes that ring eceltic and technical and tunes that ring flowing, lyrical and beautiful, and they never ... read more
Surprisingly phenomenal album. The sonics here are borderline unparalleled on the year, but the lyrics occasionally do more than fall short of my expectations. If they were middling it'd be one thing but a few times they were distractingly bad enough that I can't give it the perfect score it'd deserve in another world
EUSEXUA must've been Preglow because this is the one with some real shine to it (bazinga)
This album feels so much more convincing in its efforts towards the sound twigs felt like she was trying to capture on EUSEXUA, namely the difficult mixture of beautiful and engrossing atmosphere with the dance vibe of the record. twigs still will likely take some time to enter my good graces (though I hear Magdalene is amazing so I'll be checking that out), but generally this album is pretty ... read more
Yet again another classic I liked exceeds expectations on a full listen!
21st Century Schizoid Man and The Court of the Crimson King are two songs I consider undoubtedly perfect, so I went in with high expectations, and yet also believed no other track on it could live up to them. This was debatably immediately proven wrong with I Talk to the Wind, a beautiful track reminiscent of some of the lighter rock acts of the 60s predating this record, though I could tell it wasn't quite that ... read more
Rarely is an album so insanely hyped and still just as good as advertised. Entirely flawless and the first three tracks are easily the best run of all time from a quality standpoint.
the album where serj tankian hits a slur yeah yeah we know, Hip-Hop with Static-X, Shook Ones with Everlast, Wu-Tang Ain't Nothing ta Fuck Wit with Tom Morello and Chad Smith and Still Not a Player with Incubus are all solid though. Shame is still the definite peak.
I've always stood by something regarding Danny Brown, he's a perfect rapper who simply needs the luck of good features and beats coming his way to produce a perfect album. This was true with Atrocity Exhibition, this was true with Scaring the Hoes, and it is so clearly and easily true here too.
This album's feature list caused plenty of controversy between transphobes taking issue with underscores, 8485, femtanyl, ISSBROKIE, Cynthoni (aka Sewerslvt, who does actually have other ... read more
Sonny Rollins is someone I respect really heavily as a saxophone player, and this album would be fundamentally perfect if not for one song. I am boring, I think Blue 7 is overly long and not as interesting as the rest of the tracklist. It’s still good, but it takes this album down a bit all on its own. Criticisms aside, St. Thomas is a staple within the genre, You Don’t Know What Love Is has made me cry multiple times, Strode Rode has some of the best jazz soloes I’ve ever ... read more
There are some cool picks but it's ultimately too concise and shallow for me to get very deeply into beyond its surface. More importantly, what the fuck is that cover?
seeing as this is borderline must hear status I'll push it closer. this was one of my earliest ratings on this site before i purged my account and even though it's clearly flawed I still love it. concise, clearly intent on its values, and overall a lovely time that gives us a real glimpse into early punk.
