Imagine Dragons - Night Visions
43

When I look back at the first years of the 2010s, it's almost surreal to realise that at that time I barely had an unique music taste, or just artists that I listened to outside of what played on the radio and was popular online.
It was also around this time that (and I'm embarassed to say this) I was a fan of this band.
But boy, that changed quite a bit.

To make it as simple as it can be: Apart from the popular songs (like "Radioactive" and "It's Time"), there's nothing ... read more

Queen - The Game
67

Queen's 8th studio album (without counting the OST for "Flash Gordon") titled "The Game" is a record I'm yet to fully embrace and enjoy.

I usually see this record as the beginning of the band's rapid twist on the path of their musical artistry, whose quality became weaker and would only regain force years later in the band's career.

The album starts pretty well with one of the album's hits "Play The Game". While not being a track I listen to often, I always ... read more

The Killers - Imploding the Mirage
67

When I think about bands of which my interest has declined over the past few years, The Killers comes to mind.

There was a time when I listened most of their albums on repeat ("Hot Fuss" and "Battle Born" in particular) and I had a little bit of a hype for their last record "Wonderful Wonderful" when the singles were released, but I didn't take much out of it in the end.
From then on, I listened to the band less and less (nowadays I rarely listen to anything ... read more

IDLES - Brutalism
82

IDLES, the punk group formed in Bristol, is definitely my greatest musical find of this year. Last year I already had intention of getting into their work, but it was only after watching an episode of Peaky Blinders (on which one of their songs is featured) that I entered a black hole of basically being addicted to the band.

Their first record, released 5 years after the band's foundation is quite a stunner. At first it didn't impress me as much as their second record (which I'll review soon) ... read more

マクロスMACROSS 82-99 - Shibuya Meltdown
54

Macross 82-99 is sometimes one of my go-to artists to listen when I'm in a good mood, or when I feel like listening to something different from the usual.
I'm no more than a casual fan (even if lately I've listened to his work more frequently) and his newest record is the first one I listened to from beginning to end.

In "Shibuya Meltdown" Macross wanted to step away from the Future Funk genre from which his material is mostly categorised, and craft tracks that incline to dance and ... read more

Radiohead - OK Computer
94

If I had to pick one record of the 1990s that influenced me the most, that record would be "Ok Computer".
Released in 1997, it was a huge success for Radiohead and it includes some of the band's most memorable tracks on their catalogue.

Even though this concept album was released more than 20 years ago, the subject that is explored in it remains as relevant as it was back in the last few years of the 20th century, when technology was quickly taking over many aspects of society's ... read more

Queen - Jazz
75

"Jazz", Queen's seventh studio record comes in a time where the band had went through various world tours, and had already recorded some of rock's most memorable songs, two of the songs being released on their previous album.

For that matter, in my view the group took a sloghtly different approach with this album, and made it more ecletic.
When I listen to "Jazz" I get the impression that Freddie and company had a lot of fun recording it, which contributes to the vibrant ... read more

Men At Work - Business as Usual
74

The australian rock band Men At Work crafted one of the favourite songs from the 1980s, one that would be present throughout my childhood by playing on the radio or on good old VH1.
I'm talking about "Down Under", of course.
But in the past year I've discovered more of the band's work, and got deeper into them.
At last, I review their first record.

The record begins with my favourite track: "Who Can It Be Now?".
I know it's one of their most popular songs, but it totally ... read more

Radiohead - The Bends
80

Last week I went on a small car trip, and had the idea to play Radiohead's second album on the way.
It was the first time I listened to it (most of it, to be exact) in years.

"The Bends" was at one point my favourite Radiohead album. My music taste at the time was still heavily influenced
by classic rock giants like Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc., and "The Bends" shows Radiohead with a more developed and original sound compared to their debut, but still with very ... read more

Bob Dylan - Rough and Rowdy Ways
83

Bob Dylan is undoubtedly one of the most important songwriters and artists of our age.
In the last decade he only released one record of original songs (the other three projects being comprised by covers of folk classics and Sinatra songs). For this matter, I wasn't expecting the announcement of "Rough and Rowdy Ways", but I was excited for it.

I haven't heard many Bob Dylan albums apart from the ones that are considered his greatest ("Bringing It All Back Home", ... read more

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Sideways To New Italy
64

I came across Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever by accident while I browsed through a list or the year's upcoming records, on which "Sideways To New Italy" was included. Apart from having collaborated with Stella Donnely, I never heard of this australian indie-rock group so I checked them out by listening to the few singles they've released prior to the record.

To start off as straightforward as possible: This is a record that I'd consider as "comfort music". It's not that ... read more

Clã - Véspera
77

I have been anticipating Clã's new record for quite some time.

They're one of the greatest portuguese bands of the last 20-30 years and they haven't released new material for over six years, but now they're back with their eighth studio album "Véspera" (which translates to "Eve").

One element that made me have a high regard for this group, ever since I was a child listening to their hits on the radio is the amazing voice of Manuela Azevedo.
This same element ... read more

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
95

This is it. The Smiths in their prime.

"The Queen Is Dead" has been countlessly stated as the band's greatest achievement, their finest work both lyrically and musically.
Even if you prefer any of the other three records the band released, is there any doubt that this one is their most celebrated? No, there isn't.

The record's first song isn't exactly one of my favourites. To be fair, I usually skip it (a crime, I know). I do acknowledge it's strength as an opener track, as well ... read more

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters
83

Fiona Apple's new album? It gets more addicting the more I listen to it, right off the bat.
I don't consider myself that much of a devoted fan to her work but oh my God there are so many great songs in here.

The first half contains fave after another. Songs like "Under The Table", "Shameika" and the harmonious "For Her" give this record such a strong personality.
Fiona's voice is as strong as ever. If she was regarded before as one of the best female artists out ... read more

Ed O'Brien - Earth
69

Ed O'Brien's first solo effort was in my radar, but wasn't one of the most anticipated albums for me, even though Radiohead is one of my favourite bands.

From the point I start the record, the elements that strike me the most (when comparing Ed's sound with the Radiohead sound I'm used to) is the more acoustic aproach of the majority of the 9 tracks of this album, and the overall lighter atmosphere that's carried on through it.
"Brasil", "Long Time Coming" and ... read more

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
90

The other day I listened to this record for the first time in quite a while, and I felt the enormous need to write a review on it.

The first time I ever listened to this record, I didn't see anything special about it. Repetitive moodiness. But a year or less later, my opinion changed completely.
It is now one of my favourite records of all time, a grim expedition through Ian Curtis' mind and his fears, anxiety and dread.
We're introduced to these mindsets with the opening track ... read more

The Strokes - The New Abnormal
85

"The New Abnormal". Finally.
First new record since I got into the band, after the release of the EP "Future Present Past". And so far, the record I was most excited for this year.

I usually don't let myself get hyped for albums that arrive after a long hiatus from the band, because I'm too used to the
mediocricity of said projects. To me, a long hiatus could easily make the band lose their way or the ability to keep up with the current musical landscape. But this isn't ... read more

Porridge Radio - Every Bad
75

On a rainy quarantine Sunday, I decided to listen to this new Porridge Radio record and review it. It was an experience.
"Every Bad" by Porridge Radio will be one album that I'll look back on as one that served me as a mental remedy for this whole crisis that we're all sailing through these past months.
The expression of angst on Dana Margolin's vocals is marvellous, wasn't expecting it to be honest. It really gives personality to the album, grabbing my attention and appeal to it.
My ... read more

Cláudia Pascoal - !
71

Cláudia Pascoal's first album. The song she performed to represent Portugal in the 2018 edition of Eurovision was quite mediocre in my opinion. Not that I really care about Eurovision or any music contest of that kind...I just didn't expect much from this record.

But was it bad? Not at all!

This record was produced by one of the finest portuguese artists from his generation: Tiago Bettencourt. I think his role on the making of "!" is one of the major reasons why it's good. ... read more

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
76

My history with Dua Lipa isn't that special. Heard a few of her songs on the radio (I actually digged "One Kiss" hard) and that was it. But last year my interest grew following the few singles she released that year, that led me to look out for this album.
The first thing I point out in "Future Nostalgia" is how much Dua Lipa's sound matured. It's almost like we're looking at a completely different artist, comparing to the previous album.
Listening to the title track, I was ... read more
