Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
84

Gorillaz. They were absent for seven years, then released a record that divided a lot of people, to say the least.
A year later "The Now Now" was released, barely containing any features as to "compensate" for the bloated mess that was the previous record.

What was the next step to take?

"Song Machine". An incredible jukebox that serves as soundtrack to the first season of a series of videoclips with the participation of various talented artists of the present ... read more

Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure?
77

Jessie Ware invites you to dance away your problems on her fourth record "What's Your Pleasure?".

This album is so much better than what I was expecting. It's very vivid, with striking intimacy on Jessie's lyrics in the midst of the melodic and colourful instrumentals.

The opener "Spotlight" is one of the best songs I heard all year. It's rich in the sound elements that are connected to disco (like the string arrangements and strong bass sequences) and the lyrics about ... read more

Gorillaz - Humanz
64

I remember how excited I was for this record back in 2017. The first Gorillaz album in 7 years!! How cool was that?

The singles looked very promising, and all the visual sneak-peeks and teasers just added more to the hype...

Fuck, it disappointed so many people.

When "Humanz" was released I didn't consider it a bad album, far from it to be honest. I got the Deluxe Version on CD and played it various times in one week, and of course more times on streaming. It was addicting.

But ... read more

Queen - Hot Space
59

Oh boy.
This is the one everyone shits on.

The members of Queen weren't going through a good phase. Lots of creative differences were showing throughout recording sessions, which created tension between band members. The result was this unprepared and unflattering record.

"Hot Space" was a major drift on the band's style and musical direction, mainly because of Freddie Mercury's exploration of disco and pop genres, genres that the band's bassist John Deacon also enjoyed.

While ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy
90

"Flower Boy" was the album that introduced me to the work of Tyler, The Creator and the album that pulled me to deeper explore the rap and hip-hop genres.

This record was at the time Tyler's most anticipated record, and one that showed Tyler's artistic vision and multi-instrumental aptitudes at their peak.
The aesthetic, flow and composition of the record are very well crafted, and all the tracks are great pieces of work by themselves...Well, with an exception.

I'll just quickly ... read more

MGMT - Little Dark Age
80

MGMT released "Little Dark Age" two years ago...When the Long Dark Age was still to come.

The fourth studio album from the american duo was the first one that I looked forward to as a fan (before that time I only knew their past hits) and it went on to be one of my favourite records from that year.

The first half of the record is banger after banger.

The sound landscape of the opener "She Works Out Too Much" contradicts the lyrical material, with all the fun synthetisers ... read more

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness
81

Angel Olsen's second record is the first I listen to in its entirety.

"Burn Your Fire For No Witness" showcases all the american singer's strong features, and it's safe to say that it surpassed all my expectations.

The title of the album comes from a verse on the track "White Fire", an amazing slow-paced track that radiates a similar feel and ambient that Leonard Cohen's earlier work does as well, probably by the way Olsen vocally delivers the song's lyrics. One of the ... read more

Kelly Lee Owens - Inner Song
79

I had never heard of Kelly Lee Owens' work until I bumped into the collaboration she worked on with the legendary John Cale.

I listened to the record while barely knowing how it would sound like, and I have to say that Owen's blending and patchwork of techno, electronica and dream pop provided a great listening experience. I was left surprised!

The opening track "Arpeggi" showcases said blending, with a fururistic, science-fiction atmosphere. It's a good track, as it progressively ... read more

Coldplay - X&Y
76

"X&Y" was until recently the album from Coldplay's first years that I listened to the least, and the one that ended up being more obscure and put aside. Injustice.

A portion of Coldplay conservatives consider "X&Y" as the last good album from the band, and I totally understand why even if I like it myself.
There's a more prominent experimentation with synthetisers and a more pop-driven sound that grew throughout its recording, and for some that came off as an ... read more

Radiohead - Kid A
98

20 years ago, Radiohead released a record that would change my music taste completely.

I'll never forget the first time I listened to "Kid A", years ago. I got into the band a few weeks prior.
It was 1 am, I was sitting in the dark with my computer, about to press play on this record without knowing what I was about to listen to. The rest is history.

Radiohead took all the risks with this record, changing their sound completely after the massive success of "OK Computer" a ... read more

Jealous of the Birds - Peninsula
72

Naomi Hamilton (aka Jealous of The Birds) is one of the artists with most potential that I have the privilege to listen to.
I was very excited for her newest record after a good number of interesting singles and 2 EPs through the course of 4 years.

"Young Neanderthal" was the first single released, and its raw and primal energy gives the record a good start.
Most of the remaining of the record is made of acoustic/calmer tracks from which I give special highlight to the blissful ... read more

Fleet Foxes - Shore
75

I wasn't expecting a new record by Fleet Foxes, but holy sh*t here it is!

I regard Fleet Foxes as one of the best musical acts of the past 20 years. Their mesmerising blend of folk and indie-rock always captivated me (specially on their debut).

This record can't be no different.
From the moment it started it felt like I was put on a spell, and I drifted away from reality on this ethereal current as the tracks from the album followed each other. I was particularly stressed when it came out, ... read more

Vin Diesel - Feel Like I Do
0

I never reviewed a single before, but I had to express my disgust on this one.

Vin Diesel was probably so bored during the pandemic and the inability to film yet another bland action/car race movie that he came up with the genius idea of recording...This.

This is horrible.

What the hell is up with his voice? You can barely get what he is "singing". It's probably both Vin and the producer's fault.

The beat is as bland as the movies he is usually in.
There's nothing here to ... read more

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
82

If there's a band that captured the vibrance of the impetuous night life of the end of the 2000s, it's probably Vampire Weekend with their debut album.

Some of the greatest anthems of 2000s alternative are on this record. It showcased some of the band's crucial features, like the vibrant electric guitar riffs, the ecstatic rhythm with inspiration from afro music (that is present on most of the songs here) and flamboyant lyrics that stretch out from love affairs and life in university to ... read more

IDLES - Ultra Mono
87

I've waited so long for this one, and I'm so fucking grateful that it didn't disappoint!!

Even though it was one of the year's most anticipated records for me (if not THE most), "Ultra Mono" fucks hard.
IT FUCKING FUCKS!

Apart from "A Hymn", the singles were very good in my view.

"Grounds" became one of my favourites from the band, as I perceive it as an anthem for anti-racist and oppressive systems.
I really enjoyed the energetic, motivational and at times ... read more

IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance.
95

If you ask me to show an album from the past few years that shows that there are still bands out there with grit and whose songs shake up the listener to acknowledge modern problems, I'd most certainly give you "Joy As An Act Of Resistance".

While I really enjoy their debut "Brutalism", this record elevated the band to a whole new level, being highly praised back when it was released.

The band also took their lyrical content to another level, ranging from sexism and toxic ... read more

Gus Dapperton - Orca
57

(Thank you so much for 100 followers!)

"Orca", Gus Dapperton's second album is...Quite odd.

I'll start this review with the positives.

When Gus released the first single from this project (the track "First Aid"), he stated that his second album would be comprised of tracks with more serious tones and lyrical material.
This statement sparked some curiosity on how the tracks would end up.
I'll admit that indeed, there was a big improvement on the lyrical material compared ... read more

Samuel Úria - Canções do Pós-Guerra
80

Samuel Úria is one of the best portuguese artists out there today, building up a strong fanbase and catalogue for the past 11 years.
In his first album in 4 years, Úria writes and sings about about nostalgia, injustice, and love.
Its title translates to "Songs of Post-War".

One of Samuel's prime qualities is his songwriting.
Basically every song is worth noting for its lyrics, they all showcase the great vocabulary Samuel possesses as well as a great way of ... read more

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
90

Recently I watched the Miles Davis documentary that's up on Netflix, and even though I was slightly familiar with his material, the documentary inspired me to listen to his greatest albums carefully time and time again, making my taste for jazz grow stronger.

What better album to write my first jazz review than the greatest of them all?

As you can guess, I'm not an expert in reading and evaluating music in academic terms. One reason that made me get intimidated by jazz at first is how deep ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Smoke + Mirrors
47

Imagine Dragons aren't a great band, very far from it. But if you ask me which record I prefer (or which record is less unbearable) I'd pick "Smoke And Mirrors".

Their second record shows an improvement from their debut album when it comes to the diversity of sounds and instruments used throughout.
Tracks like "Gold" and "Shots" show a slightly bigger experimentation with guitars, synths and rhythm. I consider the latter one of my favourite tracks, despite Dan ... read more
