OH GREAT! Another Boldy James drop. Seems like the guy drops every other week at this point. Oh wait? It's actually good this time??? While Boldy's last couple of drops have been pretty rough, I think he really gets back to form on this one. Token of Appreciation isn't a showstopping album or anything like that, but it's a very nice, concise, chill experience. Chuck Strangers is someone that I'm fairly familiar with, especially because 1999 by Joey Bada$$ is constantly ... read more
Really solid deluxe. All of these songs could easily fit on the original and the quality is just as good.
This is the first Lucki album that REALLY clicked with me. He's had some good albums, but none of them have been as consistent and good as this one. A lot of these songs sound incredibly fun, and most definitely bang in the car. However, beneath the surface lies incredibly deep and personal lyrics about death, drug addiction and several other depressing topics. The upbeat, fun and bouncy production contrasting with the bleak and dark subject matter makes for an incredibly interesting ... read more
I can't believe Nirvana stole the baby cover from Lucki! In all seriousness though, this project is pretty fine I guess. I actually think it gets off to a pretty solid start, but the quality definitely wanes in the final stretch of this album. Lucki sounds almost unrecognizable compared to his early works. In fact he sounds a little sleepy, maybe even too sleepy at some points. There's some really solid production on here though, and for the most part, I think Lucki does a nice job of ... read more
My goodness, this was so much fun. If you've been tapped into Paris Texas at all, they are some of the most fun and creative underground acts out right now. Even though these guys have released a couple of projects, including their debut album "MID AIR", it still seems like they haven't gotten the spotlight they deserve. This EP seemingly came with no promo at all, and it caught me by surprise when I saw they dropped this. Needless to say, Paris Texas once again delivers ... read more
We are now beginning to see a stark evolution in Lucki's sound and style. There were glimpses of it in his last project, but now he's fully transitioned into this trap/plugg sound. There's even a little bit of memphis rap influence sprinkled in here as well, whether if its from a sample or the production choices by K Swisha. This is a really fun EP, with a bunch of energetic beats paired with Lucki's chill, calculated delivery. While I don't think this is his strongest ... read more
Yeah man, this is genuinely a nothing-burger of a project. Most of the mixes on here just sound way too quiet for some reason. We are beginning to see a little bit of progression in Lucki's sound into more of a trap-centric style but most of this just sounds super unremarkable. I don't think the production on here is all that good either. It leans into the sounds of his previous projects a little bit, but I don't think it does nearly as good of a job at capturing that ethereal ... read more
Body High has an extremely similar sound and aesthetic compared to Alternative Trap. However, while Alternative Trap sometimes contains stylistic switchups of in the sound, this project has a much more focused, central sound. It heavily leans into that trippy, atmospheric sound that Lucki's early work is known for. I think I actually prefer some of the production on here compared to Alternative Trap. Beats like the one on Slow Down are absolutely mind-melting. If you're wearing ... read more
This is what Lucki sounds like? Really? I'm someone who has had limited exposure to Lucki's music, but a lot of people have recommended his stuff to me. So, I figured it was finally time that I dive into his discography. Apparently, Lucki was around 16-17 years old when he made this project, which is pretty remarkable. Even more remarkable is how surprisingly deep and vivid his lyrics can get about drug dealing. Accompanied by his stellar lyricism is this really spacey, atmospheric, ... read more
You know what to expect, and I'm not going to elaborate much further. This is GARBAGE!
I really appreciate the direction that Westside Gunn took with this new release. I think most of us can agree that "11" really fell flat because of the excessive phone calls and interludes. If you follow Gunn on any social media (especially X), you will know that he's pretty active on there. He definitely sees the criticism, and I think he took some of that criticism to heart when he made 12. He even put out a version of STILL PRAYING without DJ Drama because people thought he ... read more
I've been wanting to write a review about this project for about a week now, so now that I have some free time, I figured now's the time. As soon as you look at the cover you know exactly what this joint is gonna sound like. This honestly would hit extremely hard if it was summer, but I digress. I'm very happy with how this turned out. It's not a generational album by any means, but it totally serves it's purpose as a collection of chill, luxerious and laid-back rap ... read more
Bread, while only being a 4 song EP is seriously great (not counting the instrumentals of course). Dare I say that these tracks are generational even. Yeah man, this is just Alchemist at his very best. This is really a collection of some of the most incredible beats that he's ever made. Ray Mysterio and E. Coli have absolutely otherworldly sounding beats. It's not just beautiful sounding beats either, The Alchemist can get down and DIRTY with a grimy beat like on Mac 10 Wounds. The ... read more
Freddie Gibbs best buddy (JPEGMAFIA) has returned once again to drop some more tunes! I really like the concept of this release. Instead of just releasing a deluxe with only new tracks, we got essentially Peggy's original vision for what this album was going to be. It's like the opposite of a Kanye release. Ye loves to put out an album in its rawest form and then tweak it along the way until he reaches a final product that he's satisfied with. Peggy decided to take the opposite ... read more
Funnily enough, this is the first Weeknd album I've ever listened to, and it also happens to be his last album (at least for now we'll see if that changes in the future). Don't get me wrong though, I've heard plenty of his music, especially because he is so popular. However, I haven't properly given one of his projects a listen so I thought it was finally time I change that. Hurry Up Tomorrow is the final album that is a part of his most recent trilogy of albums. ... read more
BabyTron try not to make the same song 1 million times in a row challenge (IMPOSSIBLE). I've already said all that needs to be said regarding Tron's recent output. The magic from his earlier projects just isn't present in his latest music. There hasn't been any advancement in his sound whatsoever, and he's basically been rapping over the same recycled Detroit trap beats for like 2 years straight. Song Wars isn't an overtly bad EP, but it doesn't do anything to ... read more
Boldy must be being held at gunpoint because there is no reason he needs to be dropping ANOTHER project. Whoever is threatening Boldy to drop can you please let the man rest... PLEASE? Luckily Permanent Ink is a pretty big step up from his past 2 projects. It's still nothing crazy though. Honestly, this isn't the worst album in the world, in fact I think it's quite serviceable. However, I hold Boldy to much higher standards than other rappers. I have to say, I'm glad this ... read more
Ain't no way they got North West on here speaking Japanese again ðŸ˜. FKA Twigs is an artist that I haven't heard a lot from, but pretty much everything I've heard has been really good. I've listened to some of MAGDALENE and some features and that's about it. I honestly had no idea that she was dropping an album tonight, I just happened to stumble upon this. So I figured it was time to check out one of her projects in full. I didn't know what to expect from her, ... read more
Man, I thought Stove God Cooks was the most unique rapper affiliated with the Griselda movement. BOY was I wrong. I didn't even know that Estee Nack had an official release with Griselda until today, and I have to say that this was quite an interesting project. Up to this point, I've only heard him on some features and thought, "Huh this guy sounds interesting I guess". Today, I would finally venture into one of his albums, and I don't think I was prepared. I still ... read more
Hatton Garden Holdup is nothing super crazy or out of the norm for these two, but it is a solid project. To be honest, Rome Streetz is unbelievably consistent, and he's probably the most consistent artist in Griselda right now. So, to no one's surprise, his latest album is pretty solid. Daringer took a pretty simple approach to the production on this album. There is a lot of standard boom-bap production, with some samples thrown in there for good measure. It's nothing crazy, but ... read more
