I have no idea why I would like 10+ minutes of droning guitar noise more than another 10+ minutes of droning guitar noise, but I do. I like Between Sleipnir's Breaths and Novæ more than Troubled Air, and I found Aurora boring. Novæ is all crunchy and dissonant and great, and well on it's way to making a guitar sound like a didgeridoo.
Great. Lyrics I undertstand and which are interesting and music that sounds nice. I undertstand why this was raved about and on a bunch of best of the year lists. So perhaps I'm not completely clueless, even though I didn't get what was so great about the Caroline Polachek album.
Perhaps I shouldn't be listening to music through speakers I got from a Christmas Cracker. I don't understand why this is so raved about. It's fine but jeez look how many people said it was Album of the Year 2023. My expectations were way higher than they should have been. Ok, I'll go buy some better speakers and try to learn what the music nerds are talking about when they opine on Production Quality and stuff being at various layers of the mix or whatever.
Probably I need to listen more intently to the lyrics. Having not done that yet, I got bored. I'll try again, and probably give a better score, when my attention span improves. Some nice little dinglidongly old Hollywood noises in here though.
Best album of 2023. You might find it a bit gimmicky with the found art feel it has, created apparently by recording on tapes and then, I guess, bashing the tapes with a magnet hammer, and then recording the album again from the tapes. But it works for me.
Oxytocin is great, but Not My Responsibility is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Everything else falls somewhere in between.
Quality. Also, Dido and Rollo Armstrong are credited as composers on The Ballad of the Costa Concordia, you know them, right? Dido and her brother the bloke from Faithless. I just found that interesting because The Ballad of the Costa Concordia doesn't sound much like Dido or Faithless. I can't get no sleep
I can't get no sleep
I can't get no sleep
I need to sleep, I can't get no sleep
I need to sleep, I can't get no sleep DOO DOO DO DO DO DOO DO DO, glowsticks, STAN! etc
Very strange. Sometimes it sounds like Power Metal, sometimes like Grunge, sometimes like Nu-metal which, as far as I know, didn't exist yet. Sometimes it feels like 1987, sometimes like 2004, but mostly like the '90s. But that's ok, because the '90s are the best. RV feels like Underwater Spoken Word Country Funk Metal... but I'm not sure if that's a thing.
If it was just Too Many Puppies it would get 100/100. But it's Too Many Puppies plue twelve other songs that are also great.
Want to feel like you're having an epileptic seizure while your hand is glued to the radio dial? But in a good way?
I don't get it. I can't give it score. I give myself a 45/100 for having no idea if it's good or not. Encino man walked into a Jazz club and made confused noises, but the jazz cats liked him and let him record with them. And this all happened in Finland. And they called it Brutal Prog Grindcore or something, and forgot to include any guitars. You go listen to it, I don't know.
When I can distinguish a track from the other ones, some of it is listenable, but perhaps only once. Siege of Power, Born on Your Knees and Scum were good... I think. It's difficult to tell. It definitely starts to drag a bit once you get to the second half.
I can't believe some people don't like Dog Inside Your Body. It's great. Also Who Was In My Room Last Night is great, and The Wooden Song too, and Goofy's Concern, Strawberry and Dancing Fool as well. The Annoying Song isn't annoying at all, it's lovely. I like oddball singing and weird guitar noises. Accountants make the best music. I give this 99 plus a bonus point for having a banjo in The Ballad of Naked Man.
This sounds too fast to be sludge to me, but what do I know. Pretty great though, keeping things interesting with all the changes and different riffs and melodies and things all over the place.
My favourite Aesop Rock LP, although I can't remember what score I gave to Integrated Tech Solutions. The deaths of small animals seems to be a recurring motif... or did I imagine that? Kirby gifts him a mangled bird, a gopher or something gets smacked to death by the coach at the baseball game (is that what happened or was I not listening carefully enough?) and I'm pretty sure his fish dies at some point, and they will again in a future song. I have no idea what it all means, I just know I ... read more
I like almost everything about it, except I feel like the singing should be more depressed. Sometimes he sounds like he's stepped in from a nearby Power metal band and his style doesn't quite match up with everything else. Like it's a bit too hopeful, needs more doom.
