Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy this album. I love how it blends the sound of 80s industrial rock with Depeche Mode style synth pop. However, that is despite how dated it sounds and how whiny and one note the lyrics to almost every song are. Certainly seminal in the history of industrial music but doesn't live up to both the hype and the rest of NIN's discography.
A sellout album for sure, but a sellout album with quite a few catchy songs. Of course that's simply not enough to disguise what it really truly is: Empty Pop-Rock pretending to say something.
Very catchy tunes mixed with Poppy's fascinating creepy robotic persona makes for an interesting listen. Unfortunately, it never quite evolves into something that can be analyzed as thoroughly as her videos, forever remaining a simply decent record and not much more.
Lowlife is a banger but the rest of the album comes off as pretty uninspired pop rock. Humble beginnings for sure.
There's definitely some good tracks on here but it feels a little bit like he's doing shocking things without a greater purpose, which don't get me wrong can be cool on it's own but... meh, I prefer it when he tries to actually say things.
Don't get me wrong a lot of this album is quite bad, but at least I can hear it. As far as I'm concerned this is a step up from the last album.
The mix is so r e v e r b e d that i cant hear the guitars but who knows, maybe that's a good thing
