Highly-regarded elevator music.
A very OK album. I don't know, I guess I've always found David Gilmour's solo stuff to be a bit long-winded and kind of lacks emotion. This is opposed to Roger Waters' solo stuff, which is rambling and pedantic, but has more soul. This Gilmour approach seems a bit paint by numbers style, like he has a template and makes sure to check all the boxes on each song, but the sum is not larger than its parts, on each song or the album as a whole. I've never heard of these guys or the previous band so I'm out of the loop with band drama etc... that led to the genesis of this band and album. At face value after one listen I found this to be an interesting clearly hardcore influenced album that had some interesting clean/harsh vocals. The instrumentals were a bit generic, not sure I can point to much on that front, but to be clear, they aren't ever a liability either. I think my favorite track is harbinger. Will see if this ... read more
Yeah, totally listened to this album because of the cover. What can I say, it's a badass cover. As for the actual EP? Not bad...a little derivative and generic in some of the choruses but some of the metalcore elements are pretty good.
The release of the Magdalena Bay album on the same day as this is a tough break for Luna Li as Imaginal Disk really magnifies the flaws of this album. The biggest flaw for me is sort of one-dimensional and boring, but then again I find most dream/bedroom pop to be sort of boring, so I guess this album is par for the course for me. Not a terrible album by any means, but definitely forgettable.
Wow...I really didn't get a great first impression from Avanti. I found the vocals to be off-putting and kind of pretentious on most of the songs. The music was decent - for the first track, during which the band wears a Nirvana influence on the sleeve. The rest of the album turns into a sort of droning indie rock album which for the most part fades into the background, or has a sort of Weezer quality to it. I liked the song Weed the best because it was one of the only times the band ... read more
The Energy is high on this obscure early 2000s alt rock album.
Some of these guys are related to members of Incubus. Little bro band Audiovent does not stray far from the Incubus sound and would be right at home on a tour featuring Incubus and Hoobastank. Prime late 90s/early 2000s alternative rock. Let me just note that the production and mixing on this album is fantastic. I used to put this album on to test new speakers because it was so crystal clear. The first two tracks, The Energy and ... read more
Pump is another Aerosmith albums in my physical media collection though I'm not sure why. I think I found this one in a used CD bin and it's sat on my shelf for a good many years, mostly collecting dust. There are a few cuts on here that are masterful, Love in an Elevator, Janie's Got a Gun and The Other Side to be specific, and What it Takes is also a playlist worthy track. The album as a whole is a whole heck of a lot more cohesive than Permanent Vacation but still was never an ... read more
Ahh, the Atomic Fireballs, part of the glorious late-90s swing revival. These dudes were around just long enough to cash in on Torch This Place before the fever broke and the swing revival imploded. Somehow this album made its way into my physical media collection. The vocals set this apart from other swing revival albums. The lead singer's gravelly sound brings a weight to each song so even if/when the music gets a little generic (which it does from time to time), the vocals provide an ... read more
This album is like a permanent vacation, but only if you have no money to spend on anything so you just sit at home bored...so like unemployment I guess?
This is a deep dive type album. Not starter material by any means. I inherited this CD from a friend looking to lighten his collection. A few decent cuts on here but the pacing and mixing during parts of the album seems off. For example, Magic touch has a super-polished 80's sheen to it (that isn't great). This is followed by some ... read more
Get a Grip on this early 90's gem of an album.
This was the second CD I ever purchased, and I think I got the version that had fake cowhide on the cover. It was awesome. Still probably my favorite Aerosmith album, but it was released right when I was getting into rock so it was perfect timing. I mean, people can hate on this album but there are some pretty epic songs on here. Livin' on the Edge was an anthem in the 90s. Cryin' and Crazy are pretty consistently regarded as ... read more
One of my wife's albums that was always a background listen. Thought I might as well give it an active listen for once. Many of these songs are classics that defined the 2010s and still stand as great tracks today. Adele was a force in the 2010s, primarily because of this album, and 25 I suppose. I'll leave it to the Adele enthusiasts to provide a full breakdown but here are a few things I noticed during my most recent spin of this album. I like the uptempo songs so much more than the ... read more
Reviewing the International Release
Working my way through my physical media to log my collection. Forgot I owned so many AC/DC albums. After listening to Back in Black and DDDDC back to back I think I might actually prefer this album by a slight margin. DDDDC is probably my favorite AC/DC song and one that will pop into my head from time to time. Big Balls is epic. This is much more fun than Back in Black, though it still suffers from the issue I have with AC/DC, most songs are largely ... read more
I appreciate, but don't necessarily like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I get why folks would consider his music brilliant. It's just not my speed, for the most part because of the verbose lyrical structure of each song. But for someone with more of an ear toward poetry, I'm sure this is amazing. On this album I thought Conversion was pretty amazing, but that's 100% because of the chorus. O Wow O Wow was pretty good too...probably the most traditional pop musical structure on ... read more
Back in Black will always have a spot on my shelf, but it mostly collects dust.
Back in Black has some of the greatest arena rock anthems of all time but I've owned this album since I was a kid and I've always been bored with it. I don't think AC/DC is particularly talented. They play pretty straightforward blues rock, and other bands do it better. That said, when this album hits, it hits hard and pumped out some legendary songs. I'll also note that Back in Black was the ... read more
I'm not going to hate on this too much; I'll give John Legend some leeway to make an album of children's songs that are not intended for armchair amateur music critics but I do need to put on record that Legend absolutely butchered Three Little Birds.
This is shiiiiiiiiiit. This is like a clone of a clone of good autotune rap artists. Boring artistic direction, bad production, and dude has absolutely nothing to talk about.
This album is either very esoteric, or it just kinda sucks.
I'm leaning toward the latter. I don't get the feeling that Leprous had a clue in which direction they wanted to take this album, which results in an album with little cohesiveness. This is the death knell of a prog metal album; without something to hang onto, some sort of structure, the album becomes a jumbled mess of ideas and overall is BORING. This is where I'm at with this album. I like Einar Solberg, and to be ... read more
Zedd's not dead.
Awesome album cover. I didn't know anything about Zedd but threw this on my queue just because of the cover art. The transitions between tracks are pretty seamless, which is notable especially since this is an album full of guest spots so is in danger of sounding like a compilation album. The transitions keep some cohesiveness. I am honestly surprised at the quality of this album. It is right in my wheelhouse so it is sort of like returning to an old vacation spot. ... read more
