Though I'm not a big fan of Aerosmith, it's impressive how a well-known band who made good albums dropped off because of drugs and a decade later, they made one of the best albums of their career.
It's Permanent Vacation just tighter, with more variety and more consistent... also, its just a fucking good time. The singles are really the standout, Janie's Got a Gun is one of my favourite Aerosmith songs, but the rest is more than good enough to warrant a listen!
Highlights for me are Going Down/Love in an Elevator, Water Song/Janie's Got a Gun and What it Takes
'Pump' takes the formula of 'Permanent Vacation' and perfects it, with far more varied and consistent song writing, plus those increasingly grabby vocals and lyrics from Tyler.
Finally the big brash arrangements actually make sense with songs as melodically confident as 'The Other Side' and 'Love in an Elevator'. Even 'Janie's Got a Gun' is a different style of ballad, more widescreen and less played out and 'closing credits' soppy.

It always impresses me that a band with this amount of sleaze is able to also produce a thoughtful song like Janie’s Got a Gun. Thankfully, this is around the peak of Aerosmith, so the sleaze is kept to a minimum and the great rock sounds are at a maximum.

It’s mainly about sex. Jeez this band feels really overrated to me.
Did not enjoy this, a step down from their earlier albums. Love in an Elevator is one of my least favorite songs of all time.
