In its relative dark sound, this album still manages to be life affirming. You feel through its twist and turns that you are witnessing the change of someone or something, each song is fairly abstract in their lyrics, but has a narrative feel sonically. Each song also feels like its made to dance in pure obscurity, while trying to grasp with the ears each bit of interesting sound texture surrounding you. The result of all this ends up feeling epic at times
The quietest dance tunes of the year. I didn't think I could feel "smallness" through pop music, but here is such a reserved, aptly minimal and atmospheric record to evoke such a weird feeling. Also, all the track of the deluxe are interesting and welcome additions.
Encapsulates the poet's responsibility during hard times. Be it personal or external, make people's heart move.
I'd like like to highlight the absurdity of this style. The bass is overbearing, almost becoming a constant, stuttering rumble; there is little melody in here to grab to; the rapping is cold and distant, albeit quite funny at times. If I made my father listen to this he would probably say it's not even music. And yet here I am, literally 2 seconds into the album, already completely immersed in it. It's scuffed flow is the thing that takes it back the most, because 16 minutes ... read more
This is a wall. A wall of multiple sorts. Spiked, with barbed wire on top. It’s impossible to climb it without feeling some pain. It’s also where form and content coincide; an abstract depiction of everything that’s brewing inside one’s own psyche, laid out in a self-explained, shapeless sonic destruction. Experiencing this is a work of projection, there is no space for “getting lost in the sound”. It’s a constant call towards every latent bit of anger, ... read more
Rage is a weird feeling; one that I don't quite understand, but the biggest error would be looking at this album's main emotion as anger. It's bigger than that, yet more specific. It's an exploration of the shifts in mood between the melancholy derived from resignation and the violent shriek resulting from feeling overwhelmed by your own feeling. It's a greatly composed, hard-cutting project all around that has no dull moment. Maybe some of the more melodic parts are ... read more
A hurt man resorts to violent fantasies to cope, and what comes out of it is an edgy parody of a serial killer that can admittedly rap very well over pretty good beats.
There is a genuine sense of void in some of these songs representative of the absolute nothingness that was going through Eminem's head around that period of drug abuse. This results in some intriguing feelings that are also enhanced by some of the eerie atmospheres of the production. Same Song And Dance, Must Be The Ganja ... read more
There's always so much interesting stuff going on underneath the brutally overwhelming bass. For the type of album it is, it doesn't matter that it's mixed so unevenly. It gets me moving.
Non-lyrical music as a vehicle of meaning is peculiar. Much has been discussed about the ability of music to actually mean things, but I’m of the opinion that nothing in the sequenced fluctuations of tonality, timbre, texture, volume or rhythm means anything at all. As much as there may be a natural, universal affinity between our ears and certain patterns that make up the varied compositions we can come across, it is nothing more than exactly that: a biological response of sorts. And ... read more
Life captured in a song. Among the greatest, most evocative tracks the world will ever see. The passing of time has never felt so viscerally tangible until the creation of this song.
“To every age its art. To art its freedom” – Wien Secession, J. M. Olbrich
“Naturalis Historia” is a 37-volume work by Pliny the Elder, an ancient Roman writer that tried to do an encyclopaedic compendium of everything concerning nature and life, spanning from astronomy to agriculture or minerology. In it there are volumes on art, which are considered to be the very first attempt at putting together elements of art history and art criticism. Particularly ... read more
