In the crowded singer-songwriter genre, this collection of tender and personal songs truly stands out. "Light Sleeper" delivers the signature Bess Atwell experience—heartfelt lyrics, rich vocals, and dreamy instrumentals. It brilliantly addresses the difficulties of being understood and opening up to the world when you're autistic or dealing with mental illness. This is music that many people, myself included, can deeply resonate with.
Isabelle Antena, one of many French artists who found success in Japan while remaining obscure at home, released "En Cavale" after a surge of Exotica influences in City-pop. While not strictly City-pop, this album captures the same playful, summery, and lush essence. It isn't groundbreaking, but it embodies a platonic ideal of Sophisti-Pop with its perky and stylish sound, perfect for those seeking a breezy musical escape.
Max Roach is, in my opinion, the greatest jazz artist ever, with "It's Time!" standing as my favorite work of his due to its enduring freshness. The choirs on this are a stroke of genius, unmatched in their wild beauty. Roach's compositions are brilliant, rich yet allowing each soloist to shine fully, and Abbey Lincoln's performance on the closing track is among the best in vocal jazz. In short, this album is an undeniable masterpiece.
This EP is solid overall, featuring straightforward, well-executed club bangers that will make you bop your head, move your hips, etc... HOWEVER!!! "Busy Girl" is a Euro House masterpiece—steamy, sticky, and fucking addictive. Its lead synth immediately transports you to the dancefloor of a slightly grimy club, and makes you feel like the center of everyone's attention. Yes, all those men want you, but you're like... very busy, you know...
This EP from French underground post-punk act Antenn.e exudes a charming awkwardness. It’s lyrically cryptic, but their raw congenial vocal performances transform even the most abstract words into catchy existential mantras. The songwriting is highly creative, leftfield yet fun and approachable— it's some of the best I’ve personnaly heard from the French scene in quite a while. Something great is definitely on the horizon for them.
