From Indian Lakes - Able Bodies
84

started to dive into their discography and I'm not surprised that it's all fire. very unique band and some of my favorite lyrics in the post-hardcore adjacent scene.

Grayscale - The Hart
79

they're definitely drawing inspiration from bands like The Killers, Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, etc. here. I like it a lot -- these songs are BUILT for arenas. anthemic and emotional with hints of their older, more hardcore sound barely mixed in. I really love this. lyrically, this frontdude has always hit a tender spot for me.

these songs sound so damn happy, but most of them are damn sad.

Ray Bull - Baby Mode
48

considering how big of a fan of their most recent stuff I am, I am thoroughly surprised with how NOT on board with this record I am. there's a semblance of their more modern sound there, but with none of the charm.

Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute
50

today I learned I'm not a fan of Glassjaw

Shai Hulud - Misanthropy Pure
60

definitely an originator of the melodic hardcore sound, which I respect, but this wasn't for me. riffs were sick but it was a bit too chaotic for me. maybe I gotta rinse it more

Better Lovers - Highly Irresponsible
65

not as big of a fan of this as I thought I would be. when it hits, it hits GOOD but a lot of the fry vocal stuff really turns me off. the musicianship is undeniable though, so points for that for sure.

funnily enough, the softest song on the album is my favorite.

Like Pacific - Control My Sanity

these dudes do no wrong, always solid songwriting and simply addicting hooks. lead singer seems like a good dude too. will always be a fan of LP

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
73

seeing a Tom Petty cover band this weekend, brushing up. liking it a lot and looking forward to peeping more. good ol' rock n roll baby

Thornhill - The Dark Pool
68

never gave this one a fair shot, and it isn't as basic as I thought it was gonna be. its definitely meat and potatoes djenty-metalcore, but they have a lot of really neat sounds going on here that sets them apart. also, the dude's voice is really unique.

still crazy far behind what they've been doing recently but I liked hearing what they came from. new album in April, couldn't be more excited

Jack Van Cleaf - Fruit From the Trees
61

not too bad, really quiet folk music with sad lyrics. nothing I haven't heard before but I like his execution a lot. good voice, looking forward to what he does next -- hopefully he stretches his legs a little bit more

Teenage Wrist - Chrome Neon Jesus
63

not bad, but not their best. I much prefer their two most recent albums to this — it’s a lot of the same. Really good, groovy and fat riffs but a lot of the sparkle of recent stuff is missing from here. There’s a lot to like but it didn’t keep me fully engaged throughout.

I do love their tones.

FKA twigs - EUSEXUA
60

a lot of cool shit happening here. I hear death grips, I hear SOPHIE (rip), I hear CharliXCX.. the mix is beastly and satisfying. ambition is the downfall of this record imo.

I found a lot of this to be obnoxious, with it falling into some hyperpop tropes where its just RaNdOm and qUiRkY with no benefit to the track. I wish I could have heard more of her natural voice, like you hear in the final song for a little bit.

I'll say where it shines is lyrically and with the production. lots of ... read more

Above all, I love the instrumentation and mix of this album. These guys used to be straight metalcore with moments of clarity through Andrew’s stellar voice - I fell off HARD.

Now, I could actually see them going towards a similar area as The Dear Hunter. They’re all over the place with this album but somehow cohesive. A lot of synth-pop instruments, but the parts themselves aren’t pop at all (a lot of the time). The acoustic guitars add a super nice texture that I’m ... read more

Dawg, what a fucking ripper of an album. Enjoyed it all the way through. It’s hard to pick a favorite track and not have it be war pigs, but Electric Funeral was very close behind it. The sense of doom this album evokes must have been scary as shit back in 1970 - it’s no wonder people thought these guys were straight from hell. Couldn’t imagine the wall of sound seeing them live back then either, having never experienced anything like it before. Ozzy’s got pipes, the ... read more

Very cool hearing this record with the added context from your comment. Absolutely not what I expected at all, and I really enjoyed it. As the last track was fading out and I heard that acoustic guitar come in I had a moment where I was like… woah. Something just happened in my brain. It tickled it in a really special way that I can’t describe.

Love the concept and how the whole things tells a story narratively and musically. However, my favorite track was a more pop-forward one ... read more

definitely didn't enjoy this as a whole more than presence, but damn you were NOT joking about the rhythm section here. I couldn't stop listening to them, and I honestly feel like I missed out on a lot of other factors because I was so locked into BnD on the first listen through.

some of this definitely isn't for me, but I respect the hell out of it. The way they're able to build their songs dynamically is super sick -- one moment they're playing a verse then ... read more

What a cool listen. I'm a sucker for first person, personal songs - good storytelling always gets me so it isn't a surprise that I'm so into folk music.

These guys rule. What a talented guitarist, idfk who it is but they're sick as hell.

Idk if its the old fashioned that I'm drinking, but I feel floaty as shit listening to this all the way through.

Harmonies on harmonies. Beautiful. Constantly moving in and out of the melody. I'm not sure if Pet Sounds came out ... read more

really wasn't a huge fan of this one for the most part aside from Moonchild which was fuckin dope. I can't quite put my finger on what I didn't like. don't get me wrong, I love the ambition and experimentation going on here -- it's put together like a god damned symphony. just not my cup of tea though.

I feel like it's much too dramatic for my tastes. you might hate me for that. I love drama, but they just keep building shit up and I don't feel like I get the ... read more

sick. super fuckin sick. not what i expected, either. a lot of depth with this album and a ton to listen for.

my FAVORITE song is Royal Orleans, but the BEST song is Tea for One.

I absolutely love how this album sounded, but I also listened to the remastered version. plant didn't go all robert plant on this album if that makes sense -- hes a lot more understated from what I expected. this was a great place to start me and I appreciate that.

musical performances stellar all ... read more

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

man what a fever dream of a record lol. everybody in this band is firing on all cylinders and basically just playing whatever the fuck they want at any time, and it works. I wasn't looking at the track listing consistently while listening, so I couldn't really see when one song ended and the other began -- loved that. I feel like they just kept playing shit and turned whatever they wanted into specific songs by chopping up the record during interludes. I wasn't expecting them to ... read more
