reminds me of being 14 in a way that is probably not the kind of music you want to be making as a grown woman. that being said i am still the same edgy kid so i liked it
it took like 2 years of trying to sit through this album to get it, but i do now. oh my god!!
still of the opinion this is an over-bloated album with too many forgettable songs to be considered 'perfect', but my goodness are there some beautiful moments.
been stewing on this for a while. i never don't want to listen to this album. title track is a masterpiece. perfect album.
sorry i am a theatre kid and this holds up so well and i swear to god one day i WILL read war and peace
i don't care about your opinion on this album if you are not currently an angsty teen
As I've been working my way through all of Lana's albums, this has been the only one so far that I have immediately disliked. Something about this just really doesn't work for me. The lyrics feel sub-par when compared to albums like Blue Banisters, and the vocal performance is oddly unenjoyable. Standouts for me are the title track and 'Dark But Just A Game' are standouts, but still pale in comparison to tracks off her other albums.
Another album I've been completely addicted to lately. Somehow this is the first music by Phoebe Bridgers that I've listened to, and I definitely need to check out her solo stuff. Conor Oberst is fabulous as well, both artists complement each other so well. 'Dylan Thomas' is a standout track!!
This album was formative for me - both of my parents frequently played this album throughout my childhood (I stole the CD from my mother, the lyrics sheets are so beautiful). I blame the cabaret sound of their music for me eventually becoming obsessed with musicals.
So far this is the least interesting of the Lana albums I've heard (still haven't listened to lfl or cotcc). I think that at this stage Lana's lyrics weren't quite as interesting as they needed to be to flourish without the fun pop sound found on born to die, and so the comparatively low-key and slow sound of this album can make it feel like a bit slog to get through. That being said "honeymoon" has a haunting melody that complements Lana's voice and lyrical style perfectly. ... read more
Bumping up my rating from 87 to 98 because I have been listening to this album non-stop since I first heard it and it has grown on me so much. Sadness as a gift is my personal song of the year so far!!!
