Ngl, a bloody good album.
I already expected to like Dirty Harry and Feel Good Inc. , but I was surprised how many of these songs I already heard before and how fire all of them were. The way this album sounds... I don't know any other artist that really does it like the Gorillaz do.
This was a generational album which shaped my and so many other's music taste for decades to come.
Favorite songs: Feel Good Inc. , Dirty Harry and DARE
Least favorite songs: Last Living Souls, White ... read more
The first Glorb track I ever listened to.
It's mostly just flexing? Beat is quite forgettable and the references are a bit less clever than other tracks, but it is a step below tracks like Vengeance or The Bottom 3. Patrick did reach his peak in this track, so that's kind of nice.
The horny bars are kind of ok? Not too gross or over the top, but they are not interesting.
I expect this track to be a sort of middle point between the really bad early tracks and the good stuff like ... read more
This song is kind of mixed for me.
The beat is decent, Squiddy feet sample is also quite creative, but it is ultimately less interesting than some of the other ones.
The references to Heavy Metal and FaZe Clans are quite clever (Squidward's verse is top level), but they are mixed in with weird horny bars about one of their dead opps? Idk, I always get a necrophilic vibe from some of these bars.
It had been a while since I actually listened to something pop-py? It has always been a guilty pleasure for me if I put on Non-Stop Pop FM or Flash FM on GTA, but this album was a nice introduction to what it can be in the 2020s.
This album feels like pop (soft lyrics, female voice, sappy undertones, that electronic vibe, idk?), but it is more than that: it's Hyperpop! Danceable, high bpm, deep bass etc...
The music might be a bit too hard-hitting for me at times, but I vibe with it the ... read more
While I personally prefer the beat of GHOST IN THE SHELL a tad bit more (No offense to the beat btw, it's definitely better produced and still really good), this song for me is up until now the absolute peak of Glorb.
This song is better in every other way:
The lyrics are more clever and flow incredibly smooth (especially for an AI track). The hook combines multiple characters easily. We get the best Sandy verse and one of the best Squidward verses up until now. Krabs gets overshadowed a ... read more
Yeah, idk?
The Gorillaz are/were unmistakenly a cultural phenomenon and they have made some banger music over the years.
Even now their new album The Mountain is making music nerds froth at their mouths after all these years, but their debut album is such a mixed bag:
You have some great fun electronic dance tracks like 19-2000 or Rock the House mixed with some absolutely mid indie rock songs like Starshine, and it makes the album kind of hard to get through at some times.
The harsh truth ... read more
You know, everytime I put on some Trevor Moore, I feel a bit sad.
Mostly because his albums after WKUK really make me hungry for more. This album particulary feels like it wasn't near its full potential. Trevor was an amazing artist and he effortlessly made some really good country, hip-hop and ballad music, but this album is a mess just like WKUK, which is ok, but holds it back a bit sometimes.
He touches on a lot of pretty interesting subjects and some of them are the perfect blend of ... read more
It's pretty good!
Production and beats are pretty villainous here, "Geedorah" took a couple of old kaiju movies and a bunch of other stuff and stretched it out into a beautiful hip hop masterpiece just like MF DOOM did with Spiderman cartoons.
Lyrics and rapping are definitely a level below Madvillainy and MM... FOOD, but the guest artists definitely didn't fumble and tracks like Fazers, Anti-Matter and No Snakes get very close to the top level rapping of those other ... read more
Ok, I very much like the soundscape of this album and the clear production skills here. Everything sounds smooth, calm and intentional, while also having that raw edge to it. I like electronic sounds and music, and this album has some really good ones (that old 90's computer mouse click in Endless Season f.e.)
However, the songs are pretty long and it has the tendency to fade into the background instead of sucking me in. I might put on Extra or Endless Season again during a study session, ... read more
I'll be using the original album on Spotify for this review, which is different from the Remastered (rawer sound, less clear vocals) and has one extra song compared to the Track List on AOTY.
The Levellers are one heck of a unique band, let me tell you that. Compared to a lot of other mainstream and even indie rock bands, their music stands out because of their soundscape (mostly the harsh but beautiful violin), political messages and folky feel? You either love them or not based on that, ... read more
Much better than Lois imo.
We get a decent beat, really good hook and some absolute bars by Spongebob and Mr. Swags/Plankton, loved the Sticky Keys reference.
Patrick and Sandy kind of hold the track back though and Atlantis is not an insane power tour like "Ghost in The Shell" or one of those Soulless diss tracks like "Killcam" or "Vengeance": It's a filler track and that makes it ultimately less interesting.
Wow, what a nice album this is...
In comparison to Unity, this album is much more pop and rap focused and it's a better album because of it.
Songs like Liverpool and 2002/2001 really take me back to that 2000-2010 era of mainstream Dutch rap music, but Joost is so relatable and funny with his lyrics that it doesn't feel old or copied.
He also shows his talent as a kick ass house artist with Disco Belgica, Wachtmuziek and Fryslân Bop.
And next to all that he reflects on his ... read more
Ok, let me set the stage:
A couple of years ago a whole media controversy sweeps your little country because a well-known Youtuber exposes the identity of several rich snob students (indirectly) involved in a lethal hazing after the media refuses to.
You know this Youtuber already, but get a new interest in his content and discover an awesome rap song together with some Dutch guy you don't know called Joost.
Just a year later, this Joost guy is on Eurovision with a song which represents ... read more
Ok, enough beating around the bush, I HAD TO REVIEW THIS ALBUM.
After getting a PS3 and fully diving back into LBP this year, I fell in love with the game and its excellent soundtrack all over again. Every song is specially made for their respective levels/worlds and all of them hit that delicate balance between a good foreign-inspired song and shamelessly copying instruments without having a clue. The result is a global adventure of an album with some of the best music i've ever heard. ... read more
Aahhh yeah. Christmas Music is great, but most of the classic bangers are decades old at this point, so seeing a famous Youtuber take a crack at it is kind of fun.
The album does not disappoint, it's mostly covers of those old songs, but they have been re-produced with some excellent sounds and instruments all throughout. The lyrics have some subtle horror elements hiding behind it all, but your grandparents will barely notice that when you put this on next Christmas.
Santa Claus Is ... read more
Ok, first of all: this is not a Blues album. The whole "Blues" thing doesn't refer to the music imo, but the subject matter: almost every song is some kind of complaining. (and I don't mean that as an insult really)
This album has some excellent rock, jazz and pop sounds. The producers and artists have cooked a lot on this album.
However, it is consistently held back by well, being a Simpson album? I respect the voice acting work of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner etc... , ... read more
