Wtf am I doing man, I haven’t even touched the new Tyler album I’ve just been bumping this

Vylet Pony - Love & Ponystep

How the fuck did she bring emotional weight to the phrase Live Laugh Love?

Low - The Curtain Hits the Cast

This album’s atmosphere is so warm and pretty and sad and synonyms and I feel like I have so much more to say about it but don’t know how to put it into words. This is by far my favorite of the early Low albums. The vocals are incredible, the use of subtle feedback and ambience is incredible (especially on Coattails), the building tension on songs like The Plan, Laugh, and Stars Gone Out is honestly flawless, Dark is the only song I don’t really care for but that hardly even ... read more

Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica

Stars Are Projectors sounds like your stoner friend rambling about nonsensical bullshit in the first half but then the second half is one of the coolest psychedelic instrumental segments I’ve heard from any song.

Overall this is probably my favorite sound from the band even though I like lonesome crowded west more as an album. Probably the most consistent modest mouse album too, I don’t think there’s a single song on here I have any complaints towards.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

Not quite as consistent as Soft Bulletin (It’s Summertime and Approaching Pavonis don’t do much for me) but the concept is so bizarrely fun it’s practically just as good. Morning of the Magicians is underrated as fuck, the drum beat on that song is ingrained into my soul.

Modest Mouse - Night on the Sun

Title track is peak, everything else just feels like early drafts of songs that’d be perfected on Moon & Antarctica or the yellow EP I forgot the name of.

Halospit - dreamfields & badlands

Wait how has no one reviewed this album yet? This is some of the best breakcore I’ve ever heard, several of these songs feel like they convey genuine hurt and yearning, this type of breakcore doesn’t feel formulaic at all.

These songs are brilliantly structured, with layers of drum chops being gradually added throughout the runtime of many of these, building intensity to a sometimes overwhelming peak. “when i die” and “cutting off the wings of my guardian ... read more

Modest Mouse - The Fruit That Ate Itself

Atmosphere’s pretty strong, especially throughout the interludes, but none of the songs really feel like highlights for the band. Album cover’s cool tho

underscores - Music

I didn’t care for this song all that much at first, mostly since it wasn’t anywhere close to the direction I thought underscores would go in so I was somewhat taken aback.

I’ve since revisited this song about a dozen times without even really knowing why so I guess I’m obligated to change my mind on this one lmao

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin

Bouta see them play with modest mouse in about a month so I figured I might as well review as much of both discography’s as I can.

One of the comfiest sounding albums I’ve heard. There’s something so corny and goofy about Flaming Lips’ songwriting but for whatever reason it’s still powerfully effective, especially in songs like Feeling Yourself Disintegrate or Suddenly Everything Has Changed.

Also extremely consistent, there’s not a single song I moderately ... read more

of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

Very jovial sounding but also most of the time brinking insanity

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

This tracklist is so damn consistent that Give Life Back To Music is somehow my least favorite on the album. Giorgio By Moroder and Touch are legitimate masterpieces, Get Lucky is a banger I still somehow haven’t gotten tired of, Beyond is probably the most underrated song in Daft Punk’s entire catalogue, and Contact is such a perfect way to kill off Daft Punk as a whole I’m surprised they didn’t reuse it for their epilogue video.

This album is ambitious too, they go ... read more

underscores - boneyard aka fearmonger

One of the most energetic, dopamine infused EPs I’ve heard.

Underscores is really good at making bite sized bangers with replay value baked into every fiber of each song and that’s still apparent with this EP. It’s kinda hard going through favorites and least favorites with this one since there’s not really a song or moment on here I don’t like. If anything I wish some of the songs here were longer, like everybody’s dead and gunk feel like they’re ... read more

KNOWER - Life

Listened after hearing the live version of overtime and assuming this was a self serious jazz-funk-ish band, my bad I guess. Can’t remember the last time I was both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised while listening to something.

I’m excited for this band to be the next thing I get way too obsessed with for a month before seldom going back to, modest mouse was starting to get old anyway.

underscores - skin purifying treatment
65

Weirdly enough one of the few instances where I like the interludes more than the full songs. Skincare/ii, displacement of reasoning, and the second half of you look pretty good in that are really effective in conveying the awkwardness and anxiety of remaining closeted after discovering this kind of shit about yourself.

When it comes to full songs, it’s kind of a mixed bag for me. Regulate you and fka are great, even if they’re paced a lot slower than what underscores would go on ... read more

Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves

Damn dude I wanted to be the contrarian so bad.

There’s a few moments on this album that manage to recapture the magic of Good News and We Were Dead but everything surrounding it feels so soulless it only barely feels worth it.

I’ll start with highlights I guess. Lampshades on Fire is pretty decent, doesn’t have quite as strong of an infectious danceable energy as Float On or Dashboard did but it’s fun enough. Shit in Your Cut was the biggest surprise for me, I like ... read more

KNOWER - some thingies

I was not familiar with KNOWER until I heard this EP but Ima do a discography dive soon cause that second half of overtime might’ve exorcised something within me.

Overtime and Time Machine go fucking crazy, Same Smile (Different Face) was kinda whatever up until the last 30 seconds which were angelic, made the entire song worth it for me. The last track is the only one I didn’t care for but even the ending of that song went kinda hard.

If anyone has any recommendations on which ... read more

"Also I wanna clarify I don’t have an issue with religion in music or anything, if all the new material was put into a new ep or album separate from the original 2016 tracks I’d probably love it, it just feels tonally dissonant when put alongside the original album which was a lot angrier / more pessimistic."

"@klienosh …that same sorta theming. The swearing of the entire album being censored too, which I know was mainly to appeal to casual listeners outside the fanbase and so the album could be held in places like libraries, still winds up coming off like it’s trying to push itself further into that theming. Idk it probably sounds like I’m grasping at straws, and I might be, but all those factors make it feel like it’s at the very least being used as a motif"
On Car Seat Headrest - Teen of Denial: Joe's Story
"@klienosh honestly it mainly is loosely connected quotes, in ravenous house especially. The story of Joe being broken from childhood, having that broken feeling escalate towards “who’s eyes were on me” and “how can I come back” and eventually ending the song with “the bill’s already paid if you decide that you want love”, it all felt very similar to the preaching I’ve heard of giving yourself to God and whatnot. To be fair though I was looking through the genius annotations as I listened which listed a lot more comparisons to various bible verses, so that probably colored my interpretation as well. Even before that song, lines like “I want a sign from god” on fill in the blank and “temptation coming and going” on Joe Drives Again imply…"

"@WildOwen honestly that might just be something I have to keep in mind for sites like these, using it more as a means of seeking out discussion on specific albums/artists I'm curious about and losing the habit browsing it like a social media platform. Also I love the tonal whiplash between the sincerity of that comment and the beauty of that profile pic."

On 𝒩𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇𝓂𝑒𝒢𝓃𝓉's review of Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
"Only read the first bit but damn, it felt so cathartic to hear someone else talk about how toxic this site has gotten. I’m so desperate to get into music discussion, to practice making well-paced reviews on shit and bond with random strangers over love for music, but half the time I interact with anyone on this site I feel like I’m going insane. It’s discouraged me from posting here entirely, but at the same time there’s no real alternative I’ve been able to find, I’m stuck with the anti-intellectualism of this site or the cynical elitism of RYM."

"@godaberi Oh dang you’re right. It seems like they removed tenement funster from one of the other compilations as well for similar awkward transition reasons. I’m still not sure why these exist but it’s cool they’re at least correcting certain issues to improve pacing for whoever this appeals to."
On LordXenusPenu's review of Modest Mouse - Night on the Sun
"Title track is for sure one that gradually grew on me, it’s a lot more of a slow burn than most Modest Mouse songs. I think it took listening to that while sitting outside watching a sunset for the song to become one of my favorites."
