Another artist I almost forgot about that laid the foundations of my music journey approximately 3 years ago, this album is really nostalgic to me. I found out about this album from the E3 2008 "New Xbox Experience" trailer, so I bought it on CD and really enjoyed it. Does it still hold up to my tastes today? For the most part it does. I think it's a really solid album with a few weaker tracks near the end but overall, U.S.E really did bring a whole lot of new ideas to the table with ... read more
An interesting find at my thrift store, By Accident By Design has this unique garagey "art" punk sound that's executed really well. The production and the vocals are solid, the basslines and hooks are infectiously catchy, and the fact that these people only have 2 monthly listeners on Spotify really baffles my mind. Theres an insane amount of potential here and these people just couldn't get the attention they deserved.
Around 1 year ago, around the time of re-writing this review, I was never into the pop-punk/power-pop genre until I saw this appear in my recommended. I thought the album art looked really cool, so I checked it out and loved every second of it. As an introduction to pop-punk, I think MCS was probably the best route I could've gone toward since they make very solid pop-punk and power-pop.
MDL was the band's first and last album released on a major record label, since Columbia Records dropped ... read more
After checking out A Welcome to the City, I felt it was only necessary to check out the album that came before it, which was Silent Alarm, an impressive debut for the band. Some of the tracks go hard on this album, such as Helicopter and Banquet. This album has many punchy guitar solos, groovy basslines, and a fantastic use of percussion, which makes the album stand out from other albums released at the time. After a strong start, It does get a little dry in the middle, but eventually picks up ... read more
Another great recommendation from @orangedoranges, this underrated album is full of solid and consistent post-punk that has an indie rock feel and a weird nostalgia feeling. I've listened to post-punk before but I haven't checked out the revival side of it, so maybe that's why I get this indie rock feeling from it.
Vocal performances from Kele are very nice, production is solid, the experimentation thrown into this was executed quite well, and the "forgettable" tracks according to ... read more
This album was recommended to me by @orangedoranges, and this was the first time I ever heard of the grime genre along with this being the first grime album I ever listened to. I didn't have high expectations because of the album's "stylistic origins," but this absolutely blew those expectations out of the park! The lyrics are really good, along with Wiley's vocals, and it's unlike anything i've ever heard in the past, which makes it very unique in a good way. I do feel the interludes ... read more
I've been exploring the baggy genre lately in search for something new, and I think I hit a sweet spot in the genre. Baggy is a genre that sounded great back then and some albums can prove that it holds up and sounds great 3 decades later. This album proves that. The album is full of synths, punchy basslines, and awesome guitar riffs, with very solid production. The only problem I could spot with this album is that the vocal performances are a bit underwhelming, but they aren't bad, far from ... read more
This album is the perfect combination of catchy house/dance melodies and psychedelia, producing a sound that was truely ahead of it's time. This album explores many different genres, some of which were becoming more of relevance at the time, like acid house. They were inspired by house music (honorable mention to LSD and MDMA) and decided to walk away from the indie sound they established in previous albums to make Screamadelica. The sound and production is well polished, the album art is ... read more
Cities is one of the albums that I just couldn't put down and leave for nearly 3 years now. It got me through a couple of my middle school years, and now it's helping me get through high school. This is easily my favorite Anberlin record due to its amazing production quality, instrumentation that never misses a beat, Stephens great singing/song-writing, and none of the tracks have gotten old even after these 3 years. There's nothing negative I could say about Cities, it's a well crafted ... read more
Panic Stations may be one of the weaker entries in MCS' discography, but most tracks on the album are seriously under-appreciated. Songs like "Anything At All", "I Can Feel You", and "Heavy Boots" are some of the best songs that MCS has ever made with their heavy drums and great vocal melodies.
