Just a disappointment. His debut was so full of emotion and personality with a unique sound to boot, but this is just generic pop sellout material, even watering down his usually phenomenal vocal style. He can do better.
I absolutely adore the ideas and songwriting style but it REALLY wears thin on this LP, i mean the sonic textures are just the exact fucking same for all 44 minutes of this thing and the vocals also just sound completely identical throughout. Still, it’s masterfully produced, and the lyricism is insanely immersive. Every song puts me right in this album’s fantastical world, I just wish the sounds weren’t so uniformed and the song structures were less drowned out.
When faced with the problem of moving forward from their most monumental success, Depeche Mode chose to push the darker ideas played with on Violator farther, until they reached a new sound. Obviously, they didn’t reach the high standard set by that previous album - very few music acts could. God Fucking Damn. This was such a weird listen; it felt, I kid you not, what can only be described as “artfully aimless”. The album drags from song to song, but it’s really the only sort of progression that fits how the songs sound. Each track feels like it’s missing something without Groggs, and they really play into that feeling with incredibly deconstructed beats and pained lyricism.
