this is kind of a retrospective review, since i’ve had about one year to live with this record. when i first heard it, i thought it was pretty cool but i had no idea that it would grow on me as much as it had within the last year. my opinion changed from “this is pretty neat” to THE most influential album in my own songwriting as a musician, ever (even if it has a couple of flaws). it’s seriously groundbreaking, and life-changing for me.

i managed to snag the CD on XLs website for $5 before it sold out. the single is cool & catchy with neat lofi production as always but i prefer the take 20 alternate version. it’s really some neat stuff. it has a really awesome 3 and a half minute sound collage section with guitar parts that are amazingly played on that version. can’t wait for the full LP to arrive in the mail :3
more “story” sure, but at what cost?
optimistic son is a cool bonus but it’s higher production fidelity doesn’t match the rest of the record. the drums on the entire album are re-recorded or remixed for absolutely zero reason. the original drums were lofi and rough around the edges because that was the fucking point and vibe of the record and now that’s gone all down the window. what else is gone are the original lyrics on a good portion of the songs. sure the ... read more
