An older, more confident Robert Smith re-sings one of the earliest Cure songs with greater emotional weight around masculinity. It sounds just as good, with the extra bits from the 12” mix as a nice bonus. The B-sides are fun punk songs, nothing special.

“As I grab my pad and pen and begin to talk from within,” this introduction track is very poetic and emotional, I’d give it a 100, especially given the fact that it continues in the outro track. Unfortunately I found Mary’s verses sounding out of tune.
I see myself coming back to this album more often for the first four-track run. It flows so well together, and the creative accompanying music videos make the experience even better. While the “next track ... read more
This album feels flat. It might’ve worked better as a shorter project.
The intro tries to set a “Mysterious” mood while highlighting Missy’s accomplishments etc, but I found it … corny rather than compelling. Still Missy throughout several tracks remind listeners why she stands out! Overall, the album has it’s moments of fun and energy, but it struggles to maintain momentum.
So I’ve listened to the OG songs, then these covers right after, and well…
The covers are violently ’90s and more rock-oriented. However, I wouldn’t say they turned out 100% unlistenable…
I’m not going to lie, there’s not a single cover I found better than the OG. Not even with their own song “The Chauffeur” being “Drive By” have been awkwardified it with some POV-type monologue narration…whatwasthat.
And YES, there are ... read more
Damon Albarn enters his iPad kid era while touring for the Plastic Beach album, and I’m not gonna lie, it’s quite impressive… as filler material… before an indefinite hiatus.
Is it just me, or does Phoner to Arizona sound inspired by V-2 Schneider by David Bowie?!
Hillbilly Man starts off perfectly, with the most heavenly intro … but goodness is that chorus absolutely REVOLTING.
There are lovely sounding instrumentals, Detroit/ The Snake in Dallas/ Aspen Forest, ... read more
The songwriting is really what makes this album, with some incredible piano work going on!
I get the hype now! I found this to be very engaging and interesting through its unique and unexpected arrangements. I was hooked throughout the entire thing.
Here’s where his fascination with space begins. From the first track, I’m hooked by the storytelling of “Ground Control to Major Tom”… What happened to Major Tom?
The next song, ‘Unwashed and Somewhat Dazed,’ is about the space oddity, an alien on Earth perhaps?
Cygnet Committee is quite an intense song.
The other songs are alright, I guess … some lyrical reminiscences of David’s debut, but the storytelling just disappears, and the album ... read more
Some regular Cure styled songs sandwiched between quirky songs … found this to be quite a mixed bag.
1. Let's Go to Bed 78/100
2. The Dream 72/100
3. Just One Kiss 72/100
4. The Upstairs Room 73/100
5. The Walk 76/100
6. Speak My Language 68/100
7. Lament 74/100
8. The Lovecats 78/100
Thought the quality sounds super dated it adds to the charm of these semi-bangers.
What better place to start David Bowie’s discography than here? David goes all out in third-person storytelling (and sneezing)… I’m not going to lie, this was fun to listen to.
