Absolutely the most underrated album ever. I was shocked when I found out that this has such little reviews ( I know that a lot of older music is somewhat flying under the radar on here), because this album is so, so perfect.
If you expect to get the songwriting masterclass tom Verlaine presents on Marquee Moon or Adventure, then you’re wrong here. Richard Lloyd isn’t the songwriter that Verlaine is, and he doesn’t have to be.

If you think you’re as cool as Jonathan richman, then you’re wrong. No one is as cool as he is
He can’t say it! Or maybe he can I have no say in this, but I think his satirical nature compliments the social commentary of songs like Rednecks (all songs really)
Freaky! And a great mix of influences from across the commonwealth, all landing in the big pot that is this soul masterpiece
THE folk album, also thanks to its absurd creativity and how it’s the closest to a “folk opera”
I still can’t believe that an, at that point, man in his early twenties wrote an album addressing so many issues that are still omnipresent nowadays (racism, judicial bias, poverty, etc), and does it in such an accessible and easy to follow way.
How is this album real????? It feels so synchronized, yet so unpredictable. The improvisation is absolutely unreal. The way even the songs that are „worse“ than they are as album cuts, they still add so much to the atmosphere this album holds up throughout its entire runtime. Also, David Byrne is absolutely unreal as a frontman, and here you can just allow his creativity to entertain you for the entire album
Probably the best studio album ever put out ngl. It’s a window into a world that doesn’t exist, but the image you see is still so graphic and realistic. The mix of all the different genres into one is truly mindblowing. Elverum is one of the most poetic songwriters, as he proves on the following album, but here he‘s at the peak of artistic creativity
THE best album ever. This being a live album infuses this with so much more emotion. Shinji sounds so pain ridden, but at the same time so passionate for the music he loved. One of the most tragic deaths in music history.
