I love that she loves Tom Waits. I do too. A heartbreaking rendition of this killer song that she really makes her own.
If you're already a fan, you'll probably like this. I know there are some tracks that really hit me and I enjoyed listening to it with it fresh and new. However, after some time, a good chunk of these songs are just "meh." This isn't a labored-over font of inspiration, like Springsteen's classics. A quarter of the record is old tracks from the early years that didn't make the cut, and while they're not bad, they're not stellar.
There are some songs packed with lazy clichés. I ... read more
What's there to say that hasn't already been said? This is album is full of powerful energy. I can't help but smile any time any one of these songs comes on. It's the sheer injection of joy and self love our world needs in 2019.
I found out about this band through some of the live sets available on YouTube. Check them out, because they're better versions than the album.
At first this album didn't catch me. I loved the live recordings I'd head of "Colors" and "Stay Gold," but the production didn't really capture that same energy.
That being said, I keep coming back to this record. These songs keep grooving. They'll get stuck in your head. The instrumentation is top-notch and damn, this dude can ... read more
I went into this thinking I would probably like it, but not be blown away by it.

The shifting bass parts bolster and elevate the songs, and the fantastic drumming holds the band together.
When people say this is pop punk, it should be noted that this band is on another level. Many of these songs have ... read more
It seems I'm going against the flow with this one.
I have been a Nick Cave fan for over 15 years. I've enjoyed his music with the Bad Seeds, as well as the Birthday Party and Grinderman. I love him for his range, as well as the quality of his writing.
With Ghosteen, the writing quality is great, but there is no musical range here. Continuing in the vein of the Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen is moody, atmospheric, and at times, beautiful. Like its predecessor, Ghosteen leans heavily on ambient ... read more
I expected something different coming into this. The marketing promoting this album pushed it as his "return to solo recordings" akin to Nebraska. Make no mistake, this isn't like Nebraska, or Tunnel of Love, or Ghost of Tom Joad, really. I heard fans rumoring that this would be his "country" album. It's not that either. My personal music knowledge doesn't include much of the orchestral pop that this is. The closest I get is it reminds me is poppier Roy Orbison.
That being ... read more
