Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo 2
85

This record is a dreamy experience of lyrical expertise and mellow, majestic vibes. The production from the talented Alchemist is a lush, jazzy flow of sounds and experimentation from its sampled style, and brings a charm to the project that has yet to be captured out of this year's catalogue. Freddie Gibbs' flow and lyricism captures the feeling of the project and amplifies it, meshing with the production in a melodical sync. Overall, this record is an incredible second coming for ... read more

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Pogo Rodeo
80

This record is one of the weirdest things I’ve experienced this year. Being the second release this year from the great Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, this record came with a lot of anticipation from be with their first this year being one of my favorites of the year, and this did not disappoint. The album starts off with some heavy hitting headbangers before ending you into an unexpected mindfuck of psychedelic vibes, guitar riffs, and warped vocals. Overall, though more unorganized than ... read more

Not for Radio - Melt
80

This record is a dreamy experience full of romantic lyricism, ambient melodies, and incredible songwriting and production. The feeling this album gives is the same as a walk at night; dark and beautiful. The psychedelic vibes of the album enhance the mood of the project, and gives it a flow that shows itself to be a great experience. The lyricism features romantic pleas for the partner to remain in the relationship, in an almost obsessive way, detailing the narrator’s love for the other. ... read more

Rochelle Jordan - Through The Wall
80

This record is a great dance record done well, with elements of deep house, alternative R&B, and dance-pop creating the perfect club album of this year. The production and songwriting experiments with the definition of the alt-R&B and deep house genres, always bringing something new to the table with every track. The romance and heartbreak in the lyricism amplifies the power of the music by tenfold. Overall, this record is a fun, danceable record, and takes the genre to an artistic high.

Snõõper - Worldwide
80

This project is a short burst of energy with tons of experimentation behind it. The production combines synth-pop and art punk to make a dancey, abstract vibe throughout the project. The vocals are fast-paced, and bring high energy to the music. Overall, this record is a brief, spontaneous experience executed really well.

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
95

This record is a story told through one of the most magical experiences I've ever heard in hip-hop. The production is insane. Tyler leans more into R&B, soul, and even psychedelic elements more than ever on this project, multiple samples coming from 70's music and older. The lyrics tell the story of a man who is stuck in a love triangle, trying to win back his ex-boyfriend from another partner, presumably a woman. Inevitably, Igor, the persona Tyler takes on this project, settles ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
100

This record is a poetic art piece that shines through a dark atmosphere. As the last project Black Country, New Road has had with their past frontman, Isaac Wood, his incredible writing and vocals show a different side of the band's creative abilities from their most recent project, 'Forever Howlong'. The genre-bending jazz and folk collide into a melancholic, bittersweet journey through depression, love, and heartbreak. Overall, this record is an incredible feat of Black ... read more

Wednesday - Bleeds
85

This record has a very unique, genre-bending sound that I've never heard before. The shoegaze-esque, heavy moments on the album stick out like a sour thumb for the genre being definable as country. The raw vocals bring this project to life, and blend well with the bittersweet, sometimes gruesome lyricism throughout the album. Overall, this record is my first exposure to alt-country, and is an incredible one at that.

Maruja - Pain to Power
90

This record is a mesmerizing piece of music that flows through incredibly. The rock and punk leads bring the energy of the album to life, as well as the jazz influences throughout the project. The vocals bring emotion to the music; an angry political protest creating an introspective atmosphere and sense of urgency for hope and kindness, an important message in this world. Overall, this record is a heart-wrenching shout against cruelty in h world, and a beautiful piece of art.

Guerilla Toss - You're Weird Now
80

This record is a zany, abstract project that sticks out from the rest of this year’s catalogue with an interesting twist on synthpop dance sounds, with punky vibes and psychedelic rock influences taking a vital role in the project. The new wave experimentation give this project a personality and enjoyable atmosphere. Overall, this record is a unique experience that I would highly recommend to anybody that enjoys experimentation in music or someone just trying to branch out their taste.

Tyler, The Creator - DON'T TAP THE GLASS
80

This record is an energetic, well-made piece from Tyler. Coming right after the incredible ‘CHROMAKOPIA,’ Tyler, The Creator’s eighth project, this album was a surprise release, the anticipation only being about 4 days long before it released. And it lives up to its 4 day hype. Though it’s not a genre-bending masterpiece like many of his more recent project, this is a fun, party-worthy project with lovable abstract production, catchy vibes, and hooking rapping. Overall, ... read more

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl
50

This record was a lot better than I anticipated, but definitely not good. The synthpop production fades in with a lot of other styles in the genre and music industry as a whole, and the songwriting can often be predictable and repetitive. The lyricism is immature for this phase of Taylor’s life and music, sometimes basic high-school lyricism, sometimes praising Travis Kelce’s dick. Overall, this record is listenable and has a passion, but is executed poorly.

AFI - Silver Bleeds The Black Sun...
75

This record is like its cover; messy but beautiful. The gothic style on the whole thing blend well with the theatrical vocals. The dark vibes and 1980’s metal influence support the album in its emotion. The beginning of the project has some interesting elements of synthpop and country, but around the end the whole thing spirals into a mess. Overall, this record is a messy experience that I don’t see myself listening to again,

Blue Lake - The Animal
85

This record feels like waking up to a beautiful sunrise and rain sprinkling down, creating a rainbow. The ambient, orchestral instrumentation build this album into a beauty beyond the regular human voice, only guided by strings and winds. Overall, this record is a magical experience that can barely be put into words. Even the project itself recognizes that.

Rocket - R is for Rocket
80

This record is an amazing fusion pop and alternative rock that blends together with itself well. The lovely, lush vocals of the album and the grungy feeling the instrumentation gives work together in a sense of immersion in the project. The indie and punk influences also shine throughout the tracks, giving the project a sense of electricity. Overall, this record loves up to the anticipation given by the singles.

Hayley Williams - Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party
85

This record is an immersive twist on the pop sounds heard in most music. Hayley William’s writing abilities have already been shown to have been great in the past, with her role as frontman of Paramore, but her solo career takes it to a high. The blends of alt-pop, indie rock, and singer-songwriter elements create a unique experience that stands out in its genre. Overall, this record is a hypnotic piece that may be one of Hayley’s best.

Geese - Getting Killed
96

This record is a psychedelic trip filled to the brim with creativity and passion. The artistic abilities of the album are incredible, with blends of krautrock, art punk, and experimental rock to create a strange stew of music that flows in an amazing way. The lyricism and vocals have a subtle feeling of pain and anguish in their violent nature. The chaotic instrumentation and noises bring the energetic feeling to life. Overall, this record is a experiment of psychedelia and artistry done ... read more

Neko Case - Neon Grey Midnight Green
85

This record is an experience with grace and beauty that shines through with emotion and passion. The vocals flow with the instrumentation of country orchestra, alternative-country and singer-songwriter elements blending together to make a beautiful hillside sunset of a project. Overall, this record is a great piece of country music, and is a great country piece from this year’s catalogue,

Purity Ring - purity ring
80

This record is otherworldly in nature, like an alien adopting dance music. The electropop production brings to life a glitchy sound with quick drums, synths, and bass. The vocals feel like liquid, and really pull together the dreamy atmosphere of the project. Overall, this record is a beautiful piece that strikes wonder into the listener.
