Mike Shabb - shabbvangogh
75

As a fellow Montrealer, I think I can speak on behalf of the city when I say that Mike Shabb is a local gem, putting Montreal on the map. After a few prolific years as a rapper and producer, Shabb sounds more confortable than ever over some of his best production, coming through with a project that allies versatility and quality. Flawed, yet a damn good hip hop record.

The hate this album is receiving on this website is getting out of control. Sure, Kanye is past his glorious days as an artist, and as a person I guess, but this album is for me a very pleasant surprise. Sure, he has said and done some absolutely insane things lately, and he keeps getting away with them, but Vultures 1 is a success. Ty Dolla $ign came through with stellar performances throughout the project, over some very consistent production from Kanye who can certainly still make some great ... read more

serpentwithfeet - DEACON
80

Jonah Wise, aka serpentwithfeet’s second album is a beautiful smooth project, and a great follow up to last year’s Apparition EP. At only 29 minutes and 11 tracks, DEACON is an easy listen and has a great replay value.

Wise approaches very actual topics, explaining his life as an homosexual and black man in today’s world , in a happy and light way. I personally thought Soil was better, as it was a more adventurous than this album, but Deacon is still a very good listen, ... read more

Genesis Owusu - Smiling With No Teeth
85

Well, that was quite a surprise ! Before seing him on the site, I had no idea who this guy was, but after seing all the positive reviews, I decided to check it out. It’s actually fantastic. Who is this man ? The versatility showcased by Owusu is mind-blowing. He goes from experimental hip-hop to funk to soul and it just works. What a debut album, I’ll definetely dig deeper in his catalog.

Lana Del Rey - Chemtrails Over the Country Club
70

It’s been a tough year for Lana Del Rey. It was time for her to bounce back after being involved in quite a few controversies. With that being said, was the album worth the hype ? While I think it was decent, I think it could have been better. Chemtrails Over The Country Club shows Lana, heartbroken again, delivering smooth vocals as usual, over pretty average production from Jack Antonoff. It’s for sure a good album, but it lacks energy, which makes the project quite monotonous ... read more

shame - Drunk Tank Pink

I have not listened to much post-punk in the past, but as this album seemed to get good reviews, I gave it a chance. Good decision ! The instrumentals on here are absolutely insane. Track after track, they kept blowing my mind. The energy is omnipresent throughout the record as well, avoiding the listener to get bored. This record was most definitely made with passion, and it’s one of the best releases of the year so far.

Brent Faiyaz & DJ Dahi - GRAVITY
83

Steve Lacy gotta chill, it’s too smooth.

Gravity is such a refreshing single delivered by Brent Faiyaz and Tyler. Brent sounds amazing, Tyler comes through with a great verse. Yeah, this song is a vibe.

6 Dogs - Buttcheeks

Rest In Peace 6 dogs. Everyone stay safe in these hard times, take care. Make sure to get help if you need it <3

UnoTheActivist - Unoverse
65

Unotheactivist is one of the most overlooked rappers in the game. He is a pioneer of the wavy trap scene, has inspired big names such as Playboi Carti, but hasn’t been able to reach the praise and attention his companions get. He starts off 2021 with a decent project, with dark synth production and standard performances. Cool listen, vibes are on point

slowthai & A$AP Rocky - MAZZA
63

While I do like Slowthai, I always thought he was quite overrated. Not to say he’s bad by any means, but he’s kinda hit or miss for me. With that being said, Mazza is a decent trap song. The beat is nothing out of the ordinary, same thing for Slowthai’s verse, who shows a lot energy, though. The chorus is annoying, the vocals are pretty weird, not really a fan of them. However, Rocky absolutely kills his verse, and has by far the most interesting part of the song. He would be ... read more

Madvillain - Madvillainy
100

Perfect album, the rating is not biased by any means because of DOOM’s death, this is one of the best albums of all time, made by one of the greatest of all time. What a loss, rest in power, legend.

Did I actually rate this a 74 at first ? I guess I was wrong. Pray for Paris is luxury rap at its finest. The production is absolutely gorgeous. The boom bap piano beats are probably the best I’ve heard all year, they feel glorious. The features are impressive. It’s one of the few times where I look at the track list and know that the album will be it. Seriously, this man managed to gather Tyler, Roc Marciano, Joey Bada$$, Freddie and a lot of the Griselda crew in a single record. ... read more

SZA - Good Days

Oh wow this is great. Amazing surprise track by SZA. Let’s hope her new project will live up to the expectations after that beautiful single.

Steve Lacy - The Lo-Fis
70

Well, it’s better than Apollo XXI for sure. Steve Lacy has so much potential, but he hasn’t been able to put out an actually really good project yet. His style of pop is quite nice, but somehow, there’s always something lacking in his music. It often comes up as unoriginal and boring teenager songs. However, this compilation of demos is fun to listen to. Steve Lacy is still very young, and I hope he’ll make the music that I think he is capable of in the future. Even ... read more

Bladee & Mechatok - Good Luck
68

I love drain gang, and I’m glad they’re getting a little bit more exposure this year. With that being said, Bladee came through with his third release of the year, which is also his worst in my opinion. While I respect the change of sound that the Swedish artist attempted on this record, I have mixed feelings about it. The EDM production doesn’t really go well along with Bladee’s sleepy signature delivery. It’s not bad, but I will have to revisit this album quite a ... read more

Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red
78

Damn Carti wildin

Sir Cartier? Cash Carti? Nah that’s Dracula Carti. The man is back with the long-awaited WLR, which is definitely not what I expected. I feel like too many people thought this would sound like a second Die Lit, but artists change, and so does Carti. He shows tremendous personality over outstanding production on this record. This album is intriguing to say the least. I liked Die Lit more, but I still appreciate the direction he took with this.

Taylor Swift - evermore
80

Taylor has been treating us right this year ! It’s nice to see the path that the pop star chose to take for her last two albums. She went from disappointing pop songs to this pretty nice folk sound very quickly, and once again it pays off on this record. Obviously, Folklore was a high point of Taylor’s discography, so dropping a second album in a year has its flaws. Some songs are among my favorite of her career and are very solid, but some others are clearly Folklore leftovers ... read more

Channel Tres - i can't go outside
72

I’ve always enjoyed that type of smooth groovy house music. I’m a big fan of artists like Kaytranada, so I thought I would enjoy this and I did ! A really simple and danceable project that is good in any atmosphere. It’s a little bit generic, but I like it.

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon III: The Chosen
82

Kid Cudi, king of the hums, incredibly influential artist, and creator of the infamous “Speeding bullet 2 heaven”, is back, two years after the incredible “Kids See Ghosts”. This man’s Man of the Moon saga needs no introduction. Both of the albums hold a special place in my heart, and stand as two of my favorite albums of the 2000’s.

This album has a lot to offer and doesn’t quite disappoint, after the very mid record that was Passion, Pain & ... read more
