This is a disappointingly droll outing for the admittedly talented rap mogul Blu, lumped in with a middling set of beats from the production crew known as Real Bad Man. In an age where the West Coast has seen a hip hop revival, this collaboration feels like a series of agonising steps into the past. Bad News takes you back to the formative years of the twenty-first century, a period where the gangsta music scene faded away, giving way for a new era of rap. Unfortunately, Bad News is less of a ... read more
This tape is seriously diverse, to its own detriment. There is no consistent style. There are shades of other artists, but without any kind of depth. The overuse of wobbly voice effects and lifeless adlibs is annoying, and Clark really could've set himself apart from his peers with the versatility and variance of his production if it wasn't so shallow. Repeating the hook ad infinitum won't make me like it more, Clark. CLARKDPROPAGANDA is fun, but little else.
Mookie Blaylock is bound to slip below the radar as far as new releases go this year. I’d never heard of Jiles or Vinyl Villain before pulling up this album, but I wish I found them sooner. Diving headfirst into this collaboration, Jiles’ ratchet bars fit oddly well with Vinyl Villain’s spacey, lofi production. The end result is an offputting yet enthralling project that wouldn’t be out of place as a new Griselda record.
On the topic of Jiles, his eclectic vocal ... read more
This man has the Midas touch, such an effortlessly breezy and relaxing tune. The only thing that stops this from being a perfect ten is how abruptly it ends. Lahai is going to be an actual religious experience if he keeps up this level of quality (which, let's be honest, is a shoe-in at this point).
It's strange to think that midwxst is only a product of the 2020s. With the acclaim he's earned, it feels like he’s been around for longer. And here he comes with his freshman twelve track album! After a mountain of EP and single releases over the last few years, it’s about time he released a full-length project.
The production across this LP is incredible. Buzzing synths, choral backing vocals, punchy percussion, and elements of jazz all combine into a comprehensive and creative ... read more
I’m still an initiate to Jeff Rosenstock’s music, having only heard a few of the songs on 2016’s WORRY. But I did enjoy that small sampler, so I came into HELLMODE with very high hopes. Rosenstock didn’t disappoint.
This is top-notch stuff. The artist seamlessly blends youthful poppy optimism with some seriously gnarly punk vocals. The way the pace and energy of each song rises and falls feels so natural, and it creates a really fun soundscape to just bathe in. ... read more
