EUSEXUA is an album with a clear cut and polished thesis: To explore the deepest depths of untamed and unrestrained pleasure in all its forms. To do so, FKA Twigs employs an extremely varied and sophisticated array of sounds. Inspired by not only house, electronic, and techno - but also the art pop giants that precede her, Twigs has constructed one of the most interesting and relentlessly abstract albums of the decade.
Title track “Eusexua” is a perfect opening track to introduce ... read more
"I Did (Bloom) features the original tracks from Yves' stellar EP "I Did", alongside 2 new tracks: "BIRD" and "See You In Hell". "BIRD" sees Yves in that indie pop/soft rock lane that she seemed to be trying to polish on "Afterglow". Here I think the approach isn't as effective as it drags on a bit. There are some nice melodic motifs but overall this song doesn't seem like one I would come back to often. However I really ... read more
I thoroughly enjoyed "11100011" as an introduction to Asian Glow's atristry. "11100011" perfectly balances the placid with the energetic - exploring a range of different sounds within shoegaze, indie pop, and even a hint of bitcore influence towards the end. Most of all, the album doesn't feel like it drags on too long at any point, a great way to begin 2025!
Favourites: "The Worst Way To Start An End"; "Jitnukebi (Winter's Song)"; ... read more
Haseul continues to paint her discography with gorgeous city pop tinged softer tracks. “Fragile Eyes” is nice because it sounds distinct enough from “Plastic Candy” and has a lot of nice little instrumental embellishments. I hope that Modhaus has an album in the works for her in 2025…
“Nebula Romance: Part I”, like every Perfume album, is filled to the brim with bright and playful synths spread across intergalactic sounding soundscapes. Here the group focuses greatly on creating a space-themed sonic adventure. Whilst not as strong as their last album Plasma, it still brings a nice variety of fun and well produced electropop tracks.
“Nebula Romance: Part I” seems to lean into a space-themed sci-fi concept. This is probably most evident on the intro ... read more
As LOOSSEMBLE make their comeback, so do I (to this website). Whilst “One of a Kind” was a weaker effort for the group - they’ve made a complete return to form with some of their strongest tracks here on “TTYL”
Opener “FANATICSM” begins in a dark and gripping way with bursts of glitched and pitched vocals. It reminds me a lot of “&” and “#” from LOONA’s discography. “TTYL” then slides in off kilter and ... read more
It makes me very happy to say that “Carnival” is a return to form for Sheena. Whilst it never quite reaches the heights of her earlier discography, it is a very consistent and sonically rich album. In spite of this, perhaps a trimming of the tracklist and some more balanced energy throughout could have elevated “Carnival”...
In classic Sheena Ringo fashion, we open with an explosive and powerful track, “offering sake”, which features Ikkyu of tricot. It ... read more
“Dall” serves as the perfect introduction to ARTMS’ world, bridging the sounds of LOONA’s discography with new concepts and ideas. However, the album still leaves space for their discography to develop and grow. All in all, “Dall” can easily be considered as a highlight in the genre of K-Pop as a whole.
Dall’s first act opens with “url”, a classic LOONA-esque intro which sets the tone of the album. Here we initially hear twinkly and funky ... read more
Yves’ “LOOP” is a great starting point for Yves as an artist. An artist who seeks to mix her kpop sensibilities with more alternative genres of music.
“DIORAMA” is a sleek R&B track with dreamy chords and a pastel soundscape. As an intro to Yves’ new identity as a solo artist, it works really well. It makes the transition from her solo songs “new” and “D-1” really sleek. “LOOP” is a pop-house track with some ... read more
And what if I said this was the best single 👀 Whilst some are tired with ARTMS’ interpolations of previous songs on these pre-releases, I find it really fun. Whilst the “Air Force One” interpolation is a bit awkward - the instrumentation on this track is just so good. The light synths trinkle over an array of breathy and whispy sounds. The melodies are really endearing too. “Dall” is looking like it could be one of the most interesting pop albums in recent years
With “Candy Crush”, ARTMS proves that the dedication to an artistic image with the interpolation of “Kehwa” in “Flower Rhythm” was more than just a bit. Taking from the city pop inspired “Plastic Candy”, ARTMS buffs the song up with more characteristic instrumentation of the genre. I feel like the interpolation here is better than on the previous single. I’m not sure how cohesive “Dall” will be, but I’m 100% sure it’s ... read more
I have to applaud “Birth” for how ambitious it is, because it really is left field. Beginning with a horror movie soundtrack sound palette that builds with haunting strings. Then modulated vocals and sharp shards of synthesisers punch into the mix. The song plays with its tempo a lot. The best part is probably the chorus (?) with the drum kit, but it only happens once, and the song ends very abruptly. It’s definitely a track that would need to grow on me, but I certainly ... read more
“eternal sunshine” beams through with the warm glow of the sun, but that doesn’t stop some of the light from being obscured by the clouds.
Ariana Grande is a popstar who has a lot of impressive hits under her belt, and a few career-defining albums that remain firmly in the memory of pop culture. Nevertheless, Ariana is one popstar who just doesn’t seem to have a magnum opus. The vocalist has definitely produced a fair few solid albums, but there really isn’t one ... read more
"Naniirodemonai Hana" is a stripped down ballad at first glance, but builds into a more layered and textured track. I like that Utada continues expanding their sound, following the gorgeous and lush soundscapes of "BAD MODE". With that being said, I do find this track a bit more dull than the last single "Gold - Mata Au Hi Made". The climax of the track is great, but some of the vocals are a tad weak. But nonetheless this is another nice listen from Utada - and I'm ... read more
First of all, someone needs to take that damn vocoder away from Mr. Daiki Tsuneta…
Despite the album being called “THE GREATEST UNKNOWN”, I damn well knew what all of my favourites on the album were before listening to the album. No album needs 12.5 singles, and the 4 piece J-rock’s 4th LP ends up feeling barely like an album at all. But despite all of this, “THE GREATEST UNKNOWN” has an undeniably star studded line up of tracks - even if we’ve heard ... read more
I really hope that “9BIT” doesn’t slip through the cracks of the AOTY tidal wave of new releases each week, because it really is one of my favourites of the year so far - just don’t listen to it at too high of a volume!
“9BIT” is perhaps one of the most confusingly fun albums I have heard to date. Every song brings weird sonic twists, diversions, and production choices. QUBIT show an intense dedication to providing experimental and unabashedly weird ... read more
“Sweet Justice” is a culmination of various tried and tested styles that TKAY Maidza has tackled throughout her discography, and is a great project overall. Though perhaps some trimming of the tracklist and sharpening could have elevated it to another level.
Opening the album is “Love and Other Drugs” a reverby R&B banger, with synths coated in gold, and some strong songwriting. This style of dense and gravitating R&B lends well to TKAY Maidza’s vibrant ... read more
“Heaven Knows” is a strong collection of tracks, most notable for its colourful and dynamic production. But I think Pinkpantheress deserves more credit for her songwriting and vocals - which prove to be a more gravitating feature of the album’s 12 track run.
The singles were already stellar. “Mosquito” balances light motifs and airy production with a rather introspective narrative on the singer’s money and spending habits after becoming famous. The chorus of ... read more
