Lingua Ignota - SINNER GET READY
87

Sinner Get Ready is a harrowing experience. Learning of what Hayter went through to produce an album like this is upsetting, especially because I saw it with my own eyes, time and time again. The only reason this isn't a 10/10 is I think some of the songs struggle to stand under their own ambition. I also think the writing could be a bit stronger on some of the tracks, The Order of Spiritual Virgins was unreal and mysterious, but the writing only occasionally lived up to that peak.

Again, ... read more

Danny Brown - XXX
82

Edit (85 -> 82)

The highs of this album are some of the highs of Danny's entire career, which is saying something. Tracks like Monopoly and both the title tracks are unforgettable. Where this album falters though is in its consistent quality. I'm sure if i time travelled back to 2011 and listened to this album, it would be mind blowing, but honestly quite a few of the beats on this record have aged poorly in my opinion. Some of the beats are questionably mixed, and i feel like the writing ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR
70

Olivia Rodrigo is genuine and the savior of modern pop music. She is young and already this popular which fills my cold black heart with joy, because I think her potential for growth is off the charts, and the hits on this album are stellar.

The biggest strength is that Olivia is able to effectively communicate her feelings on this as a teenage girl without sounding extremely self pitying. She seems to be well aware that a relationship that failed in high school isn't really a life ruining ... read more

Sampha - Lahai
100

Man, this album seriously is neck and neck with Scaring the Hoes as my album of the year. Poor Peggy man, my favorite artist and he cannot win an AOTY from me, I am sure he is devastated.

anyways, Lahai is something else, Sampha seems to be a cheat code to greatness, if you look at his feature list, he simply makes every song he's on elite. To start with, his vocals are top of the game right now, probably the best in my opinion. His voice isn't the only thing carrying the songs though, and the ... read more

Jeff Buckley - Grace
95

Buckley's voice is something else man... You would expect it to be doing the carrying, but the instrumentation and songwriting are just as incredible too. There are a couple songs that I think are sort of snags in the tracklist, mostly because they just feel slightly undercooked (Corpus Christi Carol and Lilac wine specifically). I don't think it really detracts from the album as a whole though. Jeffs tragic passing creates one of the saddest what if's I've ever thought about in music history

Porter Robinson - Cheerleader
97

Not a huge fan of the lyrical content, and anime adjacent stuff has been kinda hit or miss for me these days, but the production bangs, ill meatride all day tbh.

Everything Goes on kind of clued me in to the fact that this was going to be the direction porter would be going in for at least the next few singles, mostly the way he talked about that song.

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD
93

Definitely not as strong as IDMTHY imo, but it's a much less polarizing album. If you didn't enjoy Quad's previous record, I'd recommend giving Scrapyard a spin. Scrapyard overall has less focused approach of course, but the more varied production choices and aesthetics means almost anyone can come away with at least one song they'll enjoy

edit (88 -> 90 -> 93)

same thoughts as before, I've just grown a little warmer on some of the tracks, only 1 song in the list i can call mid ... read more

Matt Champion - Slug
90

Wasn't a huge fan of Aphid, but this track is great. excellent production, and the strange vocals are really interesting and compelling

underscores - Wallsocket
90

Wallsocket has a fantastic and versatile lineup of tracks, all of which are brought together with strong writing (mostly). The messages and themes in this album are so relatable for us gen z kids, and it's really cool to see them start to seep into the music scene. This however doesn't hurt the sound of the record at all, and all of these songs are catchy, maybe to a disturbing degree. Like the song Johnny Johnny Johnny, which is an absolute planet sized banger, but the lyrics tell the tale of ... read more

Death Grips - The Powers That B
90

This record has some of the absolute highest highs for Death Grips. On GP, Up my Sleeves, and Inanimate sensation are all probably top 10 DG songs for me among others. The production on this record is absolutely insane, the Bjork samples on Up my Sleeves in particular are truly out of this fucking world. On GP is a rare glimpse right behind the curtain for MC Ride, and it's... it's just fantastic.

Unfortunately however, the reason why this album is only a 90 is because for every seven or so ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Live at Bush Hall
87

If anyone doubted whether BCNR could keep up their hot streak after Isaac's departure, this proves them wrong. Live at Bush Hall is a change in formula for the band of course, but I think it has some really strong moments on it. May's vocals here are absolutely angelic, but I think Lewis is a noticeable sore spot when they come around. Lewis isn't a bad singer by any means- and if i recall correctly, he was sick at the time of this LIVE recording- but I don't think his singing is where it needs ... read more

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future
80

Every time Denzel drops a new record it feels like he shaves off another flaw that I hadn't recognized before. The flaw going away on this record is versatility. Melt my Eyez has such a stronger variety of sounds than Denzel's previous works, it feels like Denzel is truly maturing into exactly who he wants to be.

Recently, I watched turning the tables check this album out, and Connor made a great point about what Denzel's "it" factor was. I think, at the end of the day, its really ... read more

There's so many things to love about this record, Beyonce's exploration of this sound is fantastic and well put together. It's just a shame I don't find a lot of these tracks sticking with me that much, and on many of them i find the lyrical content in particular to be pretty vain. Not gonna go into too much detail but I think that's kind of something I don't enjoy about a lot of other queer communities

Quadeca - I Didn't Mean to Haunt You
98

One of my personal favorites of all time. I can't put into words how much I truly love this album. I think it's a huge undertaking to make an album from the perspective of a ghost and not make it cringey as hell. Every track on this album is immaculately produced with so many small details that are just amazing, and Quadeca's vocals slide into place perfectly. The writing on this record is what makes the concept, Quadeca has clearly put in the time to understand and portray his vision this well.

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
68

Pop is another genre that I don't find to be too exciting. This album is hard to spin back because the first track is awful, at least for anyone who doesn't love the sort of soundscape of Caroline Polachek's island has. A lot of the production on this record is so clean that I just find it to feel like, well, I'm in a tin can. It's hard for me to put into words exactly why I don't enjoy this type of production, one day I'll be able to.

Fucking excellent vocals though, goddamn

파란노을 [Parannoul] - After the Magic
60

One of the best shoegaze albums I've ever heard.

I still do not enjoy shoegaze. But sometimes it's not shoegaze! Which I love!

Death Grips - Government Plates
60

Unfortunately, I have no intention of ever spinning this record back, I just found it pretty boring, which is the last, and most disappointing thing you could expect out of a Death Grips album.

KIDS SEE GHOSTS - KIDS SEE GHOSTS
65

I don't find a lot of the risk taking on this record to be compelling, nor do I find a lot of the instrumentals to be to my taste. I often find myself either being hungry for something more adventurous or preferring something that's more palatable every time i spin this one again.

I say this often for many albums I don't enjoy too much, but this albums makes me feel like I'm in a tin can. Want me to explain? I can't, that's just how it makes me feel lol.

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
67

I find myself not really moved by the grand orchestration in some of these tracks. I think that the issue here really is once you fully buy into this album, its probably incredible, but I didn't, and consistently do not, find myself buying into it. Because of that, I find the numerous non-starters and annoying interludes in this album to be extremely annoying.
