i do not have any desire to re-listen to this but i don't remember it being That bad, more just mediocre. but songs like silver lining and overpass were honestly pretty memorable in a positive way, king of the clouds and high hopes were honestly not all that bad, but none of it really works as An Album. we have a duplicate of essentially the same song in tracks 3 and 4, most of the songs while passable sonically are meh to awful lyrically, and i remember songs like roaring 20s being kinda ... read more
i'm not blown away by anything on here, the songs are a bit formulaic and don't sound like the band really doing anything to bring their classic sound: forward, except it doesn't work as well now as it did a decade or two ago, and lowkey bring me the horizon have already kinda nailed that in a sense. also mike's rapping is just Not it, all the lyrics are things you'd think were cool as a teenager and it's got a couple of really bland tracks (like the third ... read more
bored out of my mind but it's: okay. the first three tracks felt cool and "the last great american dynasty" was the most interesting track just off of the way she paints that narrative, but everything after that point had me genuinely struggling to stay awake. the sound palette is very limited and, since this isn't my type of music, that gets unspeakably tedious and makes it hard to muster the energy to pay attention to anything she's saying, let alone connect with any ... read more
i listened to this in 2017 when twenty one pilots went on hiatus and i suddenly had to develop an actual taste in music and find other artists to listen to, and other than the second and third tracks i didn't really care for it at the time, but over the years as i've gone back to it here or there the tracks have all grown on me enough that i kinda wish i appreciated it more all this time. really great at building these walls of sound that still give enough room to each instrument and ... read more
i am not an imagine dragons fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it does kinda feel like sometimes people single out whichever random artist/band it's socially acceptable to hate on and reflexively trash all the work they put out. this album is: generic at worst, a compilation of mostly polished radio singles not trying to say or be much else, and a few of the songs on it are genuinely memorable for positive reasons (mostly just being catchy in the way you want pop songs to be). the ... read more
this album wouldn't be so bad in a vacuum,,, because i'd be dead, but also because the biggest downside to it is just that it feels so uninspired and derivative just by virtue of being: more of the same from the band's prior album, which it took them four years to follow up on. and i Liked that first album. this just entirely fails to justify its own existence
some of the tracks in this kinda end up blending together into this kinda melancholic blob, but the highlights are pretty engaging and memorable. i still find myself returning to tracks 3, 5 and 7 every once in a while all these years later. i Do Not understand korean so i can't judge the (korean) lyrics, but the vocal delivery does a great job at conveying energy, a range of emotions, and genuine charisma over well-made beats. (there are also pockets of english throughout here that ... read more
this isn't necessarily the best produced album in the history of humanity or anything but music, like any kind of art, isn't about trying to check boxes off any kind of rigid "objective" criteria, it's about feeling. and this album makes me feel a lot, pretty often even a decade later. it also manages to be uplifting without being shallow, and i appreciate that
i must be the only person on earth who doesn't really like luther at all, i don't like how the vocals on it sound, and i don't really care for anything said on it. the final two tracks also don't do it for me, gloria is "father time" again sonically, and while i appreciate the approach to talking about how he views his artistry, the actual analogy to a romantic relationship (or how it's portrayed) is just not what i personally wanna hear, least of all from ... read more
the craziest thing about this album is the fact that each project she puts out is noticeably better than the last, but each of them feels almost entirely perfect, genuinely some kind of arcane magic has to be going on here. also more to the point: there is not one miss on this album, even the tracks that don't start the greatest (lol) win you over by the end from how well they build-up/evolve
i used to Love this album, and i still honestly like a few tracks from it (addict with a pen, isle of flightless birds, taxi cab) but it is the band's first album and i feel like that shows, sonically pretty generic and uninteresting sometimes to the point of tedium
i hated this thing when it first released. i Hated it. but in retrospect it's mostly just inoffensive, upbeat music with a catchy beat or hook here or there, it's still competently made for the most part and it does also feature one of the best songs in this band's discography (redecorate). it's mediocre music, but mediocre music with actual human heart behind it and i can't really hate that
i liked this a fair amount when it came out, and i think a couple of tracks (wonderful life, in the dark, i don't know what to say) still hold up well, but turns out over the years a lot of it really was kinda forgettable. not inventive or compelling in the way their next album would be, not catchy in the way their prior album was. just kinda middle of the road
