Damn, I... really don't know what to think about this one. I mean, it seems like a step forward and a step back for Jamiroquai at the same time. Like, there are some songs that seem like an interesting step forward for the band, like Seven Days in Sunny June or (Don't) Give Hate A Chance. It sounds new, but weird. And then, the other half of the record is just... kinda boring. It can sound kind of uninspired, and even if there are good ideas, they're kind of half-baked. And then ... read more
Not terrible, just kind of generic. I generally like 80s music, but I don't know, it's just alright. The beats are nice, the lyrics are... kinda uninspired, and the vocals are decent, but nothing really stands out to me, honestly. Not a lot else to say, a decent 80s album, but you could do better.
Oh my god, this album is just... immaculate. This is why I love alternative and indie music, in hopes of finding absolute gems like this. I don't even know where to start with this. It;s like... French indie chill pop. It's produced in a way that feels really light to listen to, but never ever boring. There's always so many layers the song, with some parts coming in and out as needed. This isn't even mentioning the amazing range of the vocalist. The entire thing is just ... read more
Ohhhh god, this one. Freshman year of high school, I loved this damn thing, but revisiting it, it's just kinda... alright? Don't get me wrong, there are some great songs, like This Hyper World, Fine, and Dinosaurchestra Pt 3, but the rest of it just kind of fell off of me. It's very indie, which is a good thing, but it's also very indie, which is a bad thing. There are moments where you're thinking it's really good, and then there are moments where it's just ... read more
This one was a bit of a let down, but still good. I was expecting a lot of good stuff from it, but I really only walked out with a few songs I really liked (Runner, End of Beginning, Climax, and Change). It's still good, and I should love it, considering it's synthpop, but I don't know, it's just not all for me. It's solid, and I can see the appeal, it's just that a lot of songs feel like they're *mostly* there, but not all the way there yet. I can see the ... read more
This album is everything I loved about After Hours and more. Seriously, it's so damn good. I love everything about it; the synths, the concept, the instrumentation, the lyrics, and his insane voice. The concept of the album being closure and reflecting on regrets after death is done really well, and it feels like a logical step forward after After Hours. The only reason that this isn't a 100 is that a couple songs do kind of fall flat, like Starry Eyes and Don't Break My Heart, ... read more
This is uh. certainly something! Cojum Dip is like if you mixed Linkin Park with a bunch of nerdcore college kids. The result? Uhhhhhhh
Okay so this album is like pure junkie cocaine shit, and part of me loves it, and part of me hates it. Some songs that take themselves seriously (4-LOM, Moon Waltz, and Pluto mainly) are pretty damn good, and then there are songs that are so unserious they're good, like M54 and Puzzle Dust. Still, some songs end up being just too much everything to be ... read more
This one might be a hot mess that's all over the place, but it's MY hot mess ❤️
OK but real talk, I do get the hate on this one, nobody's saying it's perfect, but I just can't bring myself to hate it... It's loud, experimental, and all over the place, but it's a much-needed step forward in an artist like Tyler's discography. Hell, I'd argue that without this album, we wouldn't have IGOR. Songs like FUCKING YOUNG/PERFECT, 2SEATER and ... read more
Just really fucking good. I don't think I've got to explain myself on this, but I will still. Frank Ocean's voice is amazing, and perfectly fits the R&B sound he goes for. The instrumentation is so pretty the entire time, and I'm a sucker for concept albums, even if it's just like a radio station here. Do I really need to explain myself more? It's channel fucking ORANGE.
This one is so damn biased, but let me talk my shit here PLEASE. Call Me If You Get Lost is a kind of album that really speaks to me, and I don't even know why. It's just such a fun and pretty listen from start to finish. I love albums that aren't exactly tied to one genre, and combine the main genre with other genres, and this album does exactly that. With ranges of genres including Jazz, Soul, R&B, Reggae, Pop, and with an equally wide range of instruments, this album feels ... read more
I'm an actual sucker for when albums combine two genres to create a unique sound. In this case, it's rap and jazz, which isn't a new concept at all, but McKinley Dixon does an amazing job here. Dixon's deep, yet strong and emotional voice carries a great flow to it. It's very poetic in lyrical content and the instrumentals, with the freeform jazz really adding to the whole experience. It feels like one whole piece that's really good the whole way through. I'm ... read more
I don't get the hate on this one. Well, I kind of do, but still. This is another kind of "shift" in Jamiroquai's sound, and after two albums of confusing albums and 7 years after the last album, they really needed a breath of fresh air like this. This takes the sound of Funk Odyssey and amplifies it to where it's all techno-futuristic stuff. The result? A mixed, but not bad batch of songs. Some highlights include the title track where he speaks of a futuristic dystopia, ... read more
This is one of those albums that I kind of fell off of over time. Antony Kos makes a solid debut album here. It's sort of all over the place; like he hasn't really found his footing yet, but in the same way, it's kind of charming. Every song sounds different, but in a way that they all sound connected. I like that, and I also like how the album talks about anything, from love, friends, death, expectations, and technology. I might be reaching, but it does feel like a lot came ... read more
The damage to this album's reputation that Blinding Lights did is actually something I will never shut the fuck up about. This album is actually so good I swear, but nobody ever talks about it. The synths here are so good, I swear to god. They somehow feel nostalgic but brand new at the same time. Abel's falsetto works wonders, and it creates such a unique experience.
I love an album that tells a story or has a concept, and After Hours does both. It's a story about heartbreak, ... read more
My opinion on this changes a lot so I'm gonna keep it at a high score. Funk Odyssey is very different than the other 4 albums that preceded it, but this change actually worked really well for them! The more electronically-based music is something they can pull off surprisingly well, while still keeping the sound that defined the band in the first place. Change is always a good thing to at least try, and when it works, it pays off great, like here. Everything sounds so different, and while ... read more
I mean, it's not bad, it's just kind of live versions, alt. mixes and acapella versions. Nothing bad, but you could just listen to the live versions of Knives and Split because those are the only two things I got away from it. It's just filler, but it's alright.
Yes, it's theater kid music. But is that really a crime? My answer to this question is "absolutely not". Jhariah delivers this theatrical vibe to BEGINNER'S GUIDE that I can't get enough of. It's fast-paced, multi-genre, and all backed by an insane amount of passion. Whether the instrumentals are exploding into a chaotic symphony on songs like PRESSURE BOMB and Needed A Change of Pace, or more slower-paced with insanely high notes on songs like BAD LUCK! and To ... read more
Easily one of the best albums of the 2010s. Great production, detailed instrumentals, and Adele's voice is genuinely insane. I'm not even that much of a ballad person, but this one genuinely sweeps me off my feet every single time. The piano work is always something I'll love, and even those without it have a really interesting beat that fits with her voice in a great way. It's just beautiful overall.
