kinda gets repetitive over time, the first few tracks are nice but it feels like you run out of steam about a third of the way in, and this album is only like 30 minutes. some good concepts are here, but I guess I'm just not really into UK Hip Hop like that. I can see why people like it, though.
Some really good beats, great time listening to this at 9pm walking around my neighborhood looking like a total bum <3
Great energy, fun delivery, it does get a bit repetitive near the end (didn't care much for Climbatize) but still solid stuff! Best tracks imo were Breathe, Funky Shit, and Fuel My Fire
Yeah okay I get the hype damn. Insane, loud, abrasive, pretty much a super energetic successor to Starfucker. There's the same biting irony, but less synthpop, and more Plastic. (which i'm ecstatic for, since that was my favorite song off that album). The writing is great, the production is brain melting, and when these songs reach their peaks, they're nothing short of purified adrenaline. Extremely good.
I can't really give a good faith review to this because I know it's an album with a lot of fans who appreciate its avant-garde sound, but it just didn't really do that for me at all. I really wanted to like it; I went into it excited, but it just fell flat for me. I enjoyed the bass playing, but a lot of songs felt disjointed or like they never really went anywhere. sometimes the vocals worked, other times they felt drowned out. There are moments of good on here, especially near ... read more
Really good, actually! Surprising how much this album tries and how much of it sticks. Is it all perfect? Not exactly, I think a couple tracks could've been folded into one another, but this is a very fun album that feels like it's not necessarily defined to any one box. It feels ethereal at times, but at other times, it can feel really down to earth. Either way, there's some great stuff on display here, especially in terms of production, Seriously, this is just a solid-ass album ... read more
Some really interesting stuff in here. Not sure how I feel about all of it yet, but I do know this is pretty objectively well-produced. I can really appreciate the wide range of genres and sounds throughout this. From Yeah Right to Rain Come Down, it feels like this album is Vince trying to ask "how can I rap over unconventional beats and how far can I take it?" and by that metric this album excels. Good stuff all around, I'm just not sure if I'll revisit it for a bit, but ... read more
Rec from my friend here, and I gotta say I had a good time here! Wouldn't call myself a metalhead because I'm very inexperienced with the genre (and thus I don't know the distinct differences between most subgenres of metal), but I thought this was pretty solid all around! This album moves really fast at all times and really fills you with energy, and the tracks actually transition into one another very well, which was surprising for a 1982 album. The mixing was a bit weird in ... read more
Kind of a mixed bag on this one. Not bad per se, but inconsistent and kinda confusing at times. The good parts are when she gets into a kind of electropop club vibe. The sexual expression is kind of something I don't see a lot in this kind of alt music, at least not in this much detail. That "freak" energy also meshes well with the weirdness of the album sometimes, although it sometimes feels like it goes in the other way instead and backfires (the "can we play ... read more
Some really neat things are on this album, but not everything sticks as much as I wanted it to. I feel like the second half of this album shines a lot better, especially with standout tracks like Crash the Car and Nightmare being genuinely good songs that almost take you on a journey. The vocals are solid and unique, and the instrumentation is really cool, but I can't say I'm moved a lot by the faster-paced, frantic tracks. They're cool, but they can tend to run on for a bit ... read more
I think that overall, I prefer Satta, but this is still a solid time. Good chill energy, a nice flow betwee tracks, and guest singers all have nice vocals. I just think there's less going on from track to track, and less overall highs on this album, which leads it to being more repetitive at times. Not bad, but I'd say a bit of a letdown when comparing it to its predecessor.
Lots of good ideas here, with good writing and a nice voice that works better than you might expect! I think the main thing holding this album back is its short length and inconsistent runtimes. The standout tracks tend to be the longer ones, like Race, Gnaw, and The Same. There are so many sub 2-minute songs that have nice ideas but get wrapped up before you can really get fully sucked into them. It's definitely a good time still, but part of me wishes it were a bit more polished/refined, ... read more
A respectably weird time that may have some flaws but is overall a good time. First, I can always appreciate a good concept album, and I haven't seen many (besides Dawn FM) that treat their whole album like a radio station. The interludes are cute, and the story feels weirdly reflective of the "main character" and their life. There are some really good sounds here, and a pretty good range of them at that! The second half of this album is honestly really solid, with standout ... read more
This album is never exactly bad, per se, but it does feel like it drags on and gets a bit repetitive with time. Like, it's a pretty neat sound, and the hits like Hey Jealousy and Found Out About You are absolutely the hits here, but it doesn't feel like any of the other tracks have much to say in comparison. It's the same sound, which isn't necessarily a detriment, but tracks can really easily blend together with little variation in instruments or melodies. The tracks can ... read more
Got this rec from a friend who loves this album, and this is some neat stuff! This project is best experienced when you see it as a local live show you're watching in a basement on an otherwise uneventful day. Powerful, fun, a little rough around the edges, but it feels like it was done in one go, with nice vocals, good range in instrumentation, and more all working in this project's favor. I thought it was a neat time, and I recommend checking this out if you're on the lookout ... read more
Finally starting to get into earlier Jane Remover! This album is pretty damn good. I don't know if I'd consider it my favorite off first listen, and I could DEFINITELY stand to give this a more fair review after a few more listens, but there are some really good ideas in here, especially on tracks like misplace, search party, kodak moment and let's go home. It's a really brutally honest album that I can't believe someone made at just 18. The lyrics and energy overall ... read more
How I feel giving Thundercat another 90+ score because I literally do not care
Thundercat is by far and away the artist I listened to the most last year, so safe to say my hype for this album was through the roof. Now that it's here, I feel like I already have a pretty solid opinion of this album now: This album is a more mature version of It Is What It Is, with the same type of typical Thundercat charm that can be found in his work.
First, let's talk about the best part: The bass ... read more
I'm ngl this album is kind of a fucking mess. Like I went into this thinking "surely it won't be that bad right? maybe it just failed to live up to what ppl saw as prime Blondie." But nah this album is a genuine identity crisis in every way shape and form. As user ridofme1993_ said, there's no cohesion to this at all. I'm not asking for a 1999 pop rock album to be some masterful concept album, but this album has like seven different sounds across 14 songs, and very ... read more
This album is fine, but it feels like it runs on a bit too much. Compared to other experiences I've had with albums of this genre and/or type, this one feels like it has less to "say", and since the beats are less ambient and more breakbeat inspired, it can feel repetitive fast, which isn't a good thing. There are nice moments on here, but it overall felt kind of repetitive, like there wasn't much standout material in each track. Long track lengths and little variation ... read more
Tl;dr -- an album that I may not have fully grown into yet, but I can still love all the same.
There's an odd sense of beauty to this album. It's almost like hauntingly beautiful. Like, if I could turn "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" into an album, I feel like this is what it would sound like, even when separated of the context of SOPHIE's untimely passing. This album ricochets between loud, abrasive pieces and mellow, vulnerable ... read more
Overall, this is an album that tries a lot of ideas, and I think that's the most definite thing I can say about it. There's a lot going on here, and some of it works, and some doesn't. In my opinion, this album really swings into full gear around Wax On. That's not to say the first half is bad, but there were just some things I couldn't get behind, like the end of GTFU for instance. I can still appreciate the experimentation and fun in this, though. This is one of those ... read more
