A bit surprised at how this is. I mean, it's good and all, but top 150 of all time? I dunno, maybe it's not all for me, but I just thought this album was alright. Like, it's not below a 70, it definitely works, but it's not doing anything amazing for me. It's fun, it's got energy, but most of the songs don't really go much of anywhere. Like, it's not unlistenable or anything, but I wish that some of these had more to them, especially the title track. It ... read more
SHOUTOUT REBECCA SUGAR FRFRFR
From Steven Universe to here, Sugar is an immensely talented songwriter with a lot going for them. This was a really pleasant and happy album to listen to, and I'm glad I got to check it out. Songs like Hill to Die On and This Is a Love Song were incredible, and the rest was also just happy. The theater kid in me will never leave, cope.
I really wanted to like this one more, but it was unfortunately just "kinda cool" instead of cool. I thought JOYRIDE was pretty good last year, and it still holds up as a standout track, but the rest of the album is kinda wishy washy. CATHEDRAL is a great ending, and FREEDOM is a stellar opener, but the other songs are either just solid or kinda weirdly executed. Like, YIPPEE KI YAY. What?? It almost works but it just doesn't. I'm not gonna try to make myself like this more, ... read more
I don't get why the user score is so low on this??? I actually really mess with this. I remember the headline when he announced this album: “Letting y’all know that this album is strictly for workouts, dancing and studying and for my people that love beats.” And OK yeah considering it's finals week, I really love this. I've heard a few of Kay's other works but this album, even though it's short, mostly instrumental (with a few vocal samples), and might ... read more
A bit of a shift from Vertigo, and I'm not sure if I entirely rock with it. It starts strong, but I feel it kinda loses its steam the deeper in you go. Not like bad, but just repetitive. I think the hip hop stuff can work, but sometimes it just doesn't fit, especially like on But I Feel Good. Still, neat production, and some neat club-sounding music.
This was actually a LOT better than their debut. Like, a considerable amount greater. With North Star, I didn't like how songs were a bit too long with production that was detailed, but didn't change much. This, though, was a great change of pace! Several tracks were really enjoyable, even long ones, because they felt a bit more laid back. There's definitely more noticable sample work here, and it works in the album's favor, ESPECIALLY in If Everyone Looked The Same. Each ... read more
Some neat-ass funk/electronic music! I really appreciated the production on this album, especially moments like Captain Sensual and Wholemeal. Lots of layers stacking on top of each other to make unique sounds across the whole album. Honestly, my only problem with it is that it's kind of long. A few of these tracks could've been shaved down a bit, I feel, and still kept the overall sound/energy. Still, pretty cool!! Shoutout @MakMjuzz888 for the rec!
This is an album that starts off pretty strong, with some good beats, but I feel like it kind of loses steam near the end. Like, it's never bad, but I do think it gets a it repetitive, and the last third of the album or so didn't stand out much to me. It's a nice dance-pop/garage album, but I guess I was just wanting a bit more variety from it. Still good, just not as good as I had hoped.
Pretty neat beats! I think there's some cool parts here, especially on that last song. Overall, I just wish there was a bit more variety between the songs, if anything else. The drum beats being the same are fine, but I feel like other instruments should be able to stand out too to really make the songs pop more. Still, a good starting point! Thank you for recommending this for me to check out, @MakMjuzz888 (the artist)!
Some pretty solid production here overall! I think this artist can make some great beats, especially on Lonely People/Fallin' and I.O.U. I see a lot of people rating this album kind of harshly, when this is a really neat time with some nice moments. Seriously, these are all some really neat tracks, and I could see a lot of artists wanting to freestyle over them. Keeping an eye out for any future releases, TY @BigBen for recommending your project!
Wild how a group can take a nearly 20 year break and come back with an entry strong as ever. This album is actually really good. The production is great, and while the loss of Chad Hugo is definitely felt here, there's still some really great moments. Some great sample work, like the Arabic music interpolation in So Be It, and an all-star line up of features: Nas, Pharrell, Kendrick, Tyler, John Legend, and that's just off the top of my head. Pusha and Malice also have some great ... read more
I definitely liked this more than Lord Willin'! I feel like the Neptunes's production really shines here, with some weird beats that really shine, because Pusha and Malice can just flow through a good amount of them. Sometimes, I couldn't get too into a song, but there was always something good in a song I could identify, even if the overall song was just decent to me. The writing is really solid and consistent, and when the elements line up, it makes for a great time, especially ... read more
I don't get the hate on this; this was pretty alright! Not perfect, but pretty servicable, with some neat moments of production, and some catchy vocals at some points. I may not revisit often, especially since this is a pretty short album, but I do respect trying these new things. Thanks to @RobiBlueForever for the rec!
Oh my god the discourse for this album has been absolutely fucking NUMBING on absolutely both sides.
* NO she is not trying to appeal to pedophiles with the album cover
* NO she is not trying to make a feminist bible
* NO she is not trying to sexualize herself to sell the album
* NO she is not trying to make some master satire. Manchild is kinda cheesy and I think that's the point
Okay onto the ACTUAL review
I'm not usually huge on mainstream pop. Nothing against it, I just usually ... read more
Zara Larsson is slowly showing more and more creativity in these albums, but once again, this album feels like it peaks at the start, with a pretty solid opener, and then the rest of the album that is pretty alright, but a bit stale or repetitive. Nothing here is bad, but nothing really reaches extreme memorable territory. I do appreciate the slightly more dance-pop European electronic elements sprinkled in, such as the kicks in the title track, but this still sounds pretty similar to her other ... read more
Unfortunately while I wanted to like this one as much as I did with DNWMIBIY, I don't think it hit as strong. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty neat moments, but I feel like for an album with only 9 tracks, a couple songs are a bit too repetitive. I had to check the time at one point, and hadn't even realized I had went from Words to Los Angeles. On the other hand, though, sometimes the repetitiveness does help. My personal favorite track, Grandmother, works because of the ... read more
I can't lie, I really wanted to enjoy this one more than I actually did. This album isn't bad; far from it, in fact. Pusha and Malice are both great writers, but surprisingly, the part I was most excited for, the Neptunes production, didn't really hit for me. A lot of the beats and ideas on their own work, but I didn't love them paired with the rapping. Two good components that didn't mix well, basically. And a couple tracks were a bit too drawn out or repetitive. I ... read more
This album was pretty solid, with some neat rapping, and cool production. Not every song did it for me, but there's really good moments here, especially in the beginning. I don't know if the AI album cover rumor is real or not, but if it is, that's unfortunate, because this album deserves much more than that for a representation. Regardless, this album puts Aler on my personal map to check out again next time an album drops.
Just fucking incredible. Amazing production, extremely complex wordplay, and great storytelling. My favorite tracks were probably Tearz, Clan in da Front, and obviously C.R.E.A.M. One thing I really like about Wu-Tang, though, is that they're just confident in everything they do. There's so much reference to pop culture, martial arts, and more all throughout, and it just adds to the album, because it really feels like a group of geeks channeling all that knowledge into their writing. ... read more
