A fun little album that entertained me decently but was mostly background music. Certainly unique and memorable, but I don't think I'll be coming back for relistens tbh. CHEEZY STREET goes hard tho
Smith's experimentation with a louder, closer to rock type of sound takes his well-crafted melodies and introduces them to the wonders of electricity. As a concept, I would've expected this album to not work out so well; Smith's low energy, personal style of songwriting always felt like it suited him strongly, but in practice he shows that he has just as much talent with higher energy rock ballads as he did with the whispery tracks from Either/Or.
It's pretty cool and I always have a good ... read more
There are songs on this album that I have loved since I started listening to music at all, and songs that I fell in love with recently after listening to the full album for the first time. Morrissey, as much of a cunt as he can be, was really on point here and Johnny Marr was jamming.
The first half of this album has no skips, it's great but the second half I haven't warmed up to yet
an enchanting experience that perfectly reflects my vast, vast soul.
i dont even know what to write. saying this album is really good is both a complete understatement and also far from an original opinion. every song is good- every single one.
has some bangers, some really good songs that fit right in with his other work, but also a good few songs that just do not have the same quality as his other stuff. good overall.
the most disappointing thing to me personally was just the overall tone, his other albums pull from a variety of older genres (jazz, soul, etc.) but this one feels a lot more modern which i didnt like as much (entirely a personal preference).
humble is a banger tho
Pretty good idk idk very interesting sound with just vocals bass and drums I like it
HORSESHIT................. ON ROUTE 66 (SIXTY SIX)
[OLD REVIEW]
Quite the nice album. Sometimes his singing feels a little not-for-me, but sometimes it feels like it really makes the song. I think it might need another listen though.
[UPDATE]
yeah nevermind this one is really good. his singing is perfect, it really grew on me. so many well crafted songs that hit you in the heart and the ears.
This album hit really hard the first time I listened to it. I genuinely thought it was possibly my album of the year for 2023. However, ever since that first week of listening I find myself coming back to it less and less to the point where I don't really even listen to it anymore. I still think it's good, but it just really does not have any staying power to me.
dude I don't even know
its incredible
go listen to it
Pretty good but not my thing. Idk man the vocals weren't for me. That being said there were like 3-4 songs that I did quite enjoy.
Very reminiscent of the midwest, which should be obvious from the genre, but I feel like this album very effectively captures the sense of midwest life as a person that doesn't really fit in with certain midwest common practices e.g. being conservative, or farming. Unique sounding riffs, maybe I just like math rock. Pretty damn good for 1999. I just really like the slow, methodical melodies that seems set upon capturing a certain feeling. The Summer Ends genuinely fucking feels like someone ... read more
Supa!
This album has some iconic tracks and a few that I can't find it in myself to care for right now. I will probably appreciate the slept-on tracks more after another full listen but right now I think there were a few too many songs that felt unnecessary. Rap Snitch Knishes will always be a classic though.
It captures a specific feeling very well. I don't know how well I can relate to that feeling as someone who doesn't go to Columbia and isn't a bourgeoisie art student, but listening to this album reminds me of being on a college campus and also the 2000s, which is odd because I was alive for not much more than half the decade. Does it feel a bit dated? Sure. But I also think it is a perfect artifact of a specific time and place and feeling.
Very solid album. The sound is very clean and intentional throughout and I think it is very consistent. Each song flows well into the next and almost all hold up well on their own.
Wait holy shit its just one guy?
