Bruno Mars - The Romantic

what happened to you bruno

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal
40

holy shit i cant do this

Alice Phoebe Lou - Oblivion
60

unfortunately underwhelming but her voice is still beautiful. but she could be doing way more with it, these songs aren't doing enough for her

Maruja - Pain to Power
80

could've benefited from a carti verse

betcover!! - 馬 [Uma]

japanese geordie greep

Hayley Williams - Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party
60

There are definitely some standout tracks, but they're clouded by a lot of bloat and unoriginality. All the tracks are good, they have their standout moments, but I went into this expecting a lot more than I received. It really does not need to be 18 tracks long - but this is unfortunately the negative impact streaming has caused. I think she's capable of a much better & focused project, which Paramore's last album 'This is Why' proved.

Mac DeMarco - Guitar
70

It's a very relaxing and charming release. This is about the most I expect from Mac now, as his songwriting isn't quite as unique or exciting anymore. He just wants to write soothing guitar music! I do really enjoy listening to this album - it's comforting and inviting. The guitar tones are beautiful. And I really love when he gets into his falsetto bag on tracks like 'Nightmare' and 'Nothing At All'. You could certainly argue the songs are repetitive, but I ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - Live Laugh Love
50

Not a fan of the delivery OR the sample-heavy production... there's nothing for me to grab onto. I just recently listened to Dijon's new record, and Live Laugh Love gives me a very similar feeling. It's way too random - not structured enough to engage me. No thanks

Deftones - private music
90

Maybe I’m just being influenced by the moment, but I never expected Deftones to release another album of this calibre. After their last few lacklustre attempts, I saw them fizzling out in the way most bands tend to. I am so unbelievably thankful to be proved wrong, as they've come back with a punch.
This record is everything that’s made me love Deftones - their blend of metal and shoegaze is absolutely gorgeous, and they do it better than anyone else who dares to attempt. ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
100

I always thought this was a phenominal album from the first time I heard it (was a 90 previously). Over the past week, I've been revisiting it more and I now think it's one of the best albums I've ever heard. The instrumentals are absolutely outstanding - lavish, psychedelic, infectious. The vocal tone compliments perfectly with the poppy yet dirty arrangements. The album is prog-pop enough to stand out, be fresh, and have infinite replayability - but also has the catchiness and ... read more

Rich Brian - WHERE IS MY HEAD?
50

After a 6 year absence, Rich Brian could've done more. He's really improved on his production, but the songwriting still leaves much to be desired, as most of the songs are pretty generic. There's definitely some standouts I enjoyed, such as 'Ma' 'Serpents!' and 'Jumpy', but a lot of it just had me zoning out. But I think he's on the right track and I anticipate enjoying his next album if he continues to refine

Joey Valence & Brae - HYPERYOUTH
70

Speaking as a 20 year old white twink, this album is way too white for me.
The production talent of this energetic duo is undeniable, but the result couldn't be anything further from my preference. They're having a lot of fun with very recognizable sample choices and references to other musical artists and general pop culture. I don't like people using words like "corny" to describe music, but I'm not going to disagree with anyone who describes JV&B that way. ... read more

KAYTRANADA - AIN'T NO DAMN WAY!
60

BUBBA is proof that KAYTRANADA is capable of more, but this is a fun beat tape to release late summer. I've been particularly into electronic music recently, so maybe he's just caught me in the right mood, but I thought this was pretty good despite honestly being unoriginal for his standards. It's far from anything I haven't heard, but the production is super clean and detailed.

edit: a relisten didn't give this album any favours.. dropped my score. All the energy is ... read more

Locust - Morning Light
80

I've been wanting to check this one out for a long time, so I gave it a listen in bed, eyes closed. It was a captivating experience, featuring spacey atmospheric production & vocals, with soft beats to keep the groove (stylistically reminding me of In Rainbows). I found myself completely lost in the music at times. A serene experience which always relaxes me late at night

And yes, this album is how I discovered trip hop is an entire genre of music, and yes I will be listening to way ... read more

Dijon - Baby
50

Dijon is an incredibly talented and passionate artist with a clear vision in mind. The last thing I want to do is discredit his work, because I know basically nothing about music. Regardless, I can't change how I feel about the music, which I simply don't enjoy.
The same issue I have with artists like Bon Iver applies here; the songwriting just feels incredibly disorganized to the point where I can't find anything in the song to grab onto, and I'm instead blasted by a wall ... read more

Wisp - If Not Winter
60

There's an unfortunate lack of modern artists attempting the shoegaze sound. And while Wisp is far from reaching the heights of the genre's classic pioneers, I think she captures a unique sound of her own and crafts a nice atmosphere on this record. I see comments about it being 'shoegaze for tiktokers' and they're honestly not wrong. The guitar work is very generic (the drums are good), and the tracks are far from inventive... but they're pleasing in their ... read more

JID - God Does Like Ugly
60

I expect a lot more from JID. The production is good, but the overall song structures are very uninspired - I feel like I've heard most of these songs somewhere else before. The Forever Story gave me the impression that he was going to continue to be creative and invent new pockets for himself, but this is a step in the wrong direction. JID is still one of the best rapper in the game with incredible flows and complex rhyme schemes, but the songwriting has left me disappointed

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
80

An absolute classic, one of the best & most important metal albums of all time. It defined a genre. And it's still fantastic even for a modern first-time listen.

Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo 2
80

Even if I'm not engaged by the general subject matter (there are plenty of good bars to go around), Gibbs always has some of the best taste for beats in rap. He collaborates frequently with the best producers, and The Alchemist is of course no excepion with his smooth & jazzy work. Gibbs' delivery is great too, contrasting nicely with the aesthetic to create some of the most atmospheric rap in the mainstream. But in the end, I'm really here for Alchemist, and he delivered

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
90

A moment like this is rare. Firstly, this is a very niche record. If you aren't a part of the underground music scene or platforms such as AOTY or RYM, you'll likely never hear about the existence of this record - but I think that's also where this project belongs. It is the very essence of what this audience likes. A folktronic album with maximum, over-the-top production, yet just clear enough for all the details to beautifully shine through in twisted harmony. The accompanying ... read more

"@sean_music thank you! this is definitely a project I dont revisit but I try to be as "objective" in a sense as I can be. In other words, trying to find the merits in things I don't personally enjoy - because there's clearly an audience for it. Putting yourself in the shoes of others can impact your mindset towards art, cultivating a welcoming and appreciative attitude. So in summary, new music does not equal bad. Old music does not equal lame. Even if something doesn't appeal to you, try to understand why it would to others. Nobody is asking you to ever relisten to it again - it's only 30-60 minutes of your time on average"

"dont let other peoples opinions affect your own. if you went into it expecting it to be a 95 album, that probably hurt your experience due to those expectations (because realistically no its not a consensus 90 album, - this site just loves quadeca, myself included). i try my best not to look at user scores before listening to an album, even if im very tempted LOL"

On maskimus's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"I'm not here to call you pretentious because that defeats my entire argument. The review was well written and I appreciated it, but I immediately recognized the same flaw I once had of criticizing others, instead of simply giving my own personal thoughts and nothing more. Kant's views on beauty and art are insightful, but I think more than anything proves how inconsistent and malleable these definitions really are, if we need to look towards philosophy. It's a tricky subject in general, I don't think we should complicate things by bringing up others"
On maskimus's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"Unfortunately, everyone here projects objectivity to some degree. If that wasn't in our nature, we wouldn't be here on a site rating albums numerically. I've tried to be better as I've matured at appreciating the opposite perspective and simply declaring "this isn't for me" if I don't enjoy something (I will make objections for albums I think are truly awful, like playboi carti's newest album, but this is very rare). So you lose me with your final comment.. why can't people say its good when they think its good? This is the language used by you, and me, and everyone else on the platform. We speak in objectives even if not intentional - it's just easier than having to provide additional context of "in my opinion"."
On maskimus's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"We have two radically different approaches to music & art consumption. I appreciated the majority of your review, and I think your core argument of people-pleasing and narcissism is plausible. But to dismiss a perspective unique to yours as "right-wingers who hang a painting in their living room" or trying to define art objectively and claim we are "missing out" is ignorant. You'll likely see me as a "casual listener", and that's fine, because relative to your standards I would be. But that's because I enjoy what I listen to. Is enjoyment not the ultimate objective of art? Your disagreement is [obviously] valid, but don't bring down others, because that makes you just as narcissistic as you claim Quadeca to be."
On GraveDigginDave's review of McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
"agree somewhat but calling it passionless is a bit overboard. I would just say he isn't defining his own style and is using his influences to a fault (although clearly a bunch of people disagree). also I dont like your comment about j cole because he made 4 your eyez only which is an incredibly underrated project with lots of soul and passion"
