For the first time in years, Oliver Tree has delivered something truly ambitious, developing on many of the positive themes of his last album but with an instrumentation that is wild and free. It's a hell of a lot to swallow and at times its poor mixing mushes it all into a cacophonous mess, but I feel confident in saying that Oliver Tree *is* back.
You can tell that he really did work on this one mostly on his own -- firstly because it reflects in the immature and corny lyricism that, ... read more
his most loyal loving fans are criticising this album and he's out here playing the race card...
admittedly, people are being way too hard on this album, but it is a regression. for all the crazy shit going on in it, we are going absolutely nowhere through a bloated 25 long tracklist. its not working towards anything, it has no core statement, it has no theme, be that topical or sonically.
so as much as i want to uselessly say that the beats are really cool and that there are so many ... read more
utter and genuine travesty that this album was shelved. it feels like a cruel prank.
kanye's best vocal performances of his career are all over this thing - be it rapping or singing, he's just focused and energetic in a way he hasn't really been in any of his records prior. the beats themselves combine the experimental boldness of The Life of Pablo, the soul of College Dropout and the cinematics of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, studded with a ridiculous curation of guest ... read more
The most predictable uninspired and annoying sounding record he has made to date. I'm losing hope in Oliver's hunger to make good music as this is now two records in a row of unfinished songs - at least the last one was built on a sound concept.
I am resounded by something he said in an interview with Fantano that explains the failure of this album perfectly. When asked what was inspiring him or what he was listening to in the process of making the album, he answered:
"I ... read more
"All things bright and beautiful" adds a life-affirming, somewhat poetic aspect to the Owl City sound thanks to its greatly improved songwriting, both in structure and lyricism. It paints a positive, excited world view with the sort of attitude that only an album with a Christian proclamation could achieve.
To this day, "Jan 28, 1986/Galaxies", "Angels" and "Plant Life" really play on me emotionally - once again, the songwriting just builds each song ... read more
The face of 'trans rage' goes industrial and translates their sound perfectly, as well as doing some new things.
I'm not as enamoured as I was with the initial 2 EPs, but I am all for this direction shift!
"All I had on my computer was Audacity and I had my iTunes and I wanted to try and make music from samples I had on my iTunes" - Calum Bowen, 2024
When viewed through the lens of this quote, the 'world map' project is quite an impressive effort and as of writing, 'its day' has just turned 15, leaving it a sort of long-forgotten time capsule for collaged music.
It's peppered with world music borrowings and electronic elements, you can tell Vampire ... read more
my jaw dropped when i looked at my screen and saw that this was not only from 2014, but that it was by goreshit. i guess someone planted the flag before the likes of Femtanyl.
also Copyright Infringement is a really funny name for an EP, especially when paired with whatever Furby abomination is on the cover
holy shit he figured out how to make beats
The beats are not the best thing ever but they're an infinite improvement on the disgustingly crude 'smashing a MIDI keyboard and hope for the best' approach on "My fucked up mind"; now the problem is entirely Wyatt James' delivery - which to be fair is an improvement: I can actually attempt to suffer through it. I actually find the production to be charming if anything.
I really like the concept he put forward with ... read more
congratulations Wyatt James this is the worst thing I have ever listened to. It is a complete and utter mockery of music with such sloppy dismissive self-pitying lyricism attempting to emulate the provocative sensibilities of Eminem or a young Tyler, The Creator - and yet it can't even fucking do that. It's corny with no redeeming features and the production is so misguided I would genuinely believe that a toddler born blind and deaf made this or made something more compelling than ... read more
I can't help but smile while listening to "Bacon".
Since I don't speak Japanese I cannot comment on the quality of the lyrics, but I will say that I am glad this album is another among many in the phenomenon we are observing in the 2020s of late 90s-2000s Japanese records returning from obscurity.
It's a very bright and summery record with a tongue in cheek sound owed to its silly ear candy between jazz samples and muddy production - perhaps the influence of ... read more
The evil kermit ass vocals on this song are kinda funny and off putting but it works and progresses in a smooth and fascinating Joe Hawley way.
For as long as Joe is too mentally ill to take accountability for his actions, we are not so back. However, with this being the first coherent thing he has put on the internet in years (be that text, pictures or the music itself), we are potentially so back.. this releasing at the same time as the non-music '6:09' really leaves me in a ... read more
I gave CrazyJustice the benefit of the doubt with an NR because I wasn't sure if he was genuinely trying or if it was an asinine gag.
This however, is the shell of a once legit artist choosing to release something genuinely meritless. Joe Hawley has reached Ye status. Congrats for managing to go from being at one point one of my favourite and most respected artists to the first zero I have ever given.
Joe you know what you are capable of. You're a grown ass man and deserve all the ... read more
I rated it a 50. I wrote a crappy and frustrated review, called it artistically lazy and a misunderstanding of the album it's derived from. I have very much changed my mind on this, though its flaws are still absolutely a disappointment.
The point is, it's a much more complicated work than I gave it credit for and it deserves much more respectful and thoughtful critique than what I gave it. I will be rewriting this at some point
Fun and energetic J-Pop album, much more consistent and pleasant to listen to than its predecessor with a lot more interesting genre deviations!
There's some great transitional moments like between the intro track and Bulldozer+, or on BBM with this brazilian-phonk-inspired vocaloid J-Pop in a lush but interestingly noisy valley of sound, basically just the sound I really enjoyed PAS Tasta for when I found them through Pale Machine 2.
There's still a lot of tracks that aren't ... read more
Yess! A much more concentrated batch of songs, both in lyrical theme and genre. It plays into the raunchiness of Sabrina's brand very nicely with this urban-cowboy-meets-ariana-grande sound we've got going on. At first I was thinking this felt too derivative of that kinda 'girlypop' scene but while derivative indeed, it lends a lyrical smoothness I've found lacking from others in the space.
That being said, there is something icky to me in the place where these lyrics ... read more
Lovejoy really is the Black Country New Road mom says we have at home.. Not what we wanted, but what we deserved..
Yeah this is great and it perfectly hit the itches Geordie Greep and Lovejoy left me, and we even got a lead vocalist that doesn't bite!!
Honestly my biggest gripe is just that the whingey vocal timbre is a little overdone but other than that I'm in love with the way songs progress and build up, especially with that intro track Instrumental.
Subjecting yourself to this for any longer than 30 minutes is a bad idea, but I must admit I do enjoy the vapidity of it a little.
The bar for this album is so low that it just allows you to indulge in empty thoughts and so this kinda glides past you easily, kinda like being half asleep watching some random TV channel, which admittedly doesn't make for great music, and overstays it's welcome massively when it extends to 90 minutes of runtime.
