The tunes finally arrive for The Jam on 'All Mod Cons' and that really helps matters as now attitude and charisma aren't total deal breakers like they were before - the band are moving beyond punk.
Weller is still a little dull, he hasn't the quirkiness of Elvis Costello for example, but his phrasing and melodic singing is improving. The Jam's first true step into greatness and a massive improvement from theri previous album, All Mod Cons, sees their Mod Revival sound come to a better and engaging sound with taking elements of power pop but mainly from the upcoming New Wave scene for some energtic upbeat music which both is fun but tightly written with some catchy but conscious lyrics and great production and soundscape.

Sonic wise, I feel like this album is a lot weaker than what would come afterward. The vocal melodies don’t feel as catchy Also, instead of the very creative drumming of later albums, we get some rather bland and basic drumming.
Instead of focusing outward like on “Sound Affects”, the lyrics here focuses internally. “To Be Someone” is about fame, and the narrator’s own desires for it. He seems to be trying to figure out why fame is appealing is it the ... read more
Been meaning to check out this band for a while now. These are all very solid early punk songs, for a trio it’s pretty impressive. I liked the acoustic guitar bits every now and then, I’ve never heard a punk band incorporate acoustic guitar in their songs before
