The Montreal boys pound away at full speed here, cranking out a batch of short, frivolous songs that showcase Pierre Bouvier's nasal but weirdly appealing voice and one, "I Can Wait Forever," that seems to be rooted in real feeling.

They’re authentic. This hasn’t changed on Simple Plan, which likely means those who aren’t already fans probably won’t fall in love with the band. But the release does establish Simple Plan as one of the most consistent acts making music today-in the genres of pop, punk, rock and all points in between.

Entertainment Weekly
All things considered, this Plan to update their sound winds up being too Simple.

SPIN
Since Simple Plan never earned much cred in their old format, it's an inevitable, if over-bearing strategy.

Rolling Stone

There are some decent pop moments: "When I'm Gone" is a seize-the-day anthem with a cathartic refrain. But most songs, like the angry barnburner "The End," are barely distinguishable from a dozen or so other Warped Tour bands.

Simple Plan continue to plough forwards with a punk template of such box-ticking efficiency that they at times resemble automatons.

A.V. Club
Think Lavigne's "Girlfriend" without the hooks, but with a discernable degree of emo introspection.

NOW Magazine
This isn’t music so much as it is economic exploitation of a demographic.

This band seriously keeps improving over time and I seriously don't get the hate. This is just dumb fun. I will forever be known as the Simple Plan defender guy when I die.
The self-titled evolves Simple Plan’s sound even more and this time it leans towards more of a pop rock sound that would get explored more on the following albums while having its occasional pop punk moments. Max Martin is one of the producers this time around and you can kinda tell by the more pop rock sounding ... read more

Honestly this is hard for me to rate as of I listen to this whole album once so I give this as my highest rating as for now.

Honestly this was really hard for me to rate. I listened to this album a couple times and I feel like I genuinely enjoyed it. I think Take My Hand, The End, and What If are the shining stars on this album... but I have to admit that the rest of the songs kind of passed by without me even realizing the song had switched. I don't think any of the songs on this album are outright bad, but I do think they're generic. *for now* I think I was to rate think a soft 60, and i may come back to this album ... read more

This album was an identity crisis for the band. Some of the old Simple Plan is still here, but a bit more mature compared to their first two. However, that led to them making some generic pop rock songs that any band makes. Overall, the writing was a step down, but the production was consistent and an improvement compared to their second. It’s still their weakest album so far.

What were they thinking when they made this album… 90s Power ballads with weird electronics here and there and easily some of the worst lyrics ever on the track Generation. First time listening to this album since I was about 14.
