This is a moving and important – and fun! – record that proves MNEK is the pop star we need in 2018.

Language is satisfyingly expansive, exploring the connection between communication and physicality in contemporary queer relationships.

‘Language’ could afford to lose a few numbers - particularly the low-energy likes of ‘Body’ and ‘Girlfriend’ - but there’s more than enough evidence here that MNEK is a potent force in his own right.

MNEK’s personality, previously diluted by the artists he worked with, comes through strongly in this string of infectious dance-pop tracks for a lovely end-of-summer going-out soundtrack, polished and produced to perfection.

Occasionally ... it can feel as if he is courting the charts in a slightly soulless way.

It’s a beautifully crafted, upbeat pop album, and MNEK’s voice is compelling and gorgeous; the only small quibble is it’s a tad long.

MNEK is a strong singer capable of bracing jumps into his falsetto register. But he seems to have been so immersed in writing for others that he’s lost his own voice.
