In his songs, Ice Cube plays a character that's not quite him, a furiously raging — and very scared — kid from the streets, an angrier version of the gang member he so harrowingly portrayed in Boyz N the Hood.

The Predator is a grim album, for sure, more so than anything Ice Cube would ever again record.

Ice Cube has shut us out. In no song on The Predator can we see into his mind (let alone his heart), and it was this opportunity to feel what broils the insides of young, urban African American men that made Cube so intense.

Although this record is the weakest of Cube's first three, it has the highest highs and it's not even close. Wicked is classic Cube aggression over a sinister, Halloween-y beat that pushes the tempo and stomps out anyone trying to go for a chill vibe. Check Yo Self is a lively track that's irresistible due to Cube's sensational voice/flow, Das EFX's cartoony hook, and that louder-then-life beat of course. I don't know which album I prefer from Cube from a purely rapping standpoint, between this and Death Certificate. On most of this tracks he was rapping like the rents due. I'm mixed on a lot of the production but Cube is good enough for me to look past that. Not Ice Cube's best work but Likely the one that'll have the most replay value for me.

The inconsistency issues I had with Death Certificate are only more prominent here, with nearly every good-great track on this record being followed up by a mid song or skit. That said- the highs here are astronomically high. It Was a Good Day needs no explanation but the title track, When Will They Shoot, and Check Yo Self are also career highlights. Cube's last good record
