In fact, it wouldn't be unreasonable to say that this record could have BEEN the new AC record, flowing as seamlessly from the Merriweather Post Pavillion think-tank as it does.

Down There is less accessible than latter-day Animal Collective and harder to wrap your head around, but it isn't a callback to the more difficult sound that marked the band early on.

PopMatters

Musically and thematically, Down There is a remarkably cohesive album, but it is does falter briefly in consistency.

It may be a bit too "out-there" for your casual music listener, but those who already know what to expect can take great delight from this dark offering, whilst whetting the appetite for more in the future.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DEEP DIVE #26 (SOLO AVEY TARE): DOWN THERE

This is actually really sad... :(

By itself, it's a fairly decent and serviceable record with some really good standouts, but the context around its lyrics represents a really dark time in Avey's life. Listening to a daily album every day: Day 942

This is my first ever Avey Tare solo album I've decided to listen to, and it was pretty nice. It is very rich texturally, but it can miss interesting melodies or harmonies on some songs. The lyrics here show a much more sorrowful side to Avey than the albums released under Anco, which makes sense. The whole thing feels like it has a layer of dense haze over it. Laughing Hieroglyphic shows all the best aspects of this album. I do find it more ... read more

It's not easy to follow Avey Tare's first, sonic production on digital psychedelia, so sit, kneel or lie down on the floor and start listening....
Entering and leaving remain at your will and the procesure can be repeated for as many times as you want.
The result will always be the same!
