For those that haven’t yet bought into Bladee, EXETER probably won’t be the turning point and, even among die-hard fans, it’s minimalism has already proven to be controversial. But it’s the sort of album that rewards you the closer you lean into it.

The Needle Drop

Bladee's shoddy vocals stifle the imaginative EXETER.

It's either you think this is amazing and nothing this year came close to it cloud rap wise, or you think this is the worst thing made by mankind.

Great

Bladee delivers a project that is as close to ambient as it gets for him. With sparse and cloudy production, and a silenced, almost catatonic vocal delivery from Bladee, “EXETER” feels cold and desolate. At just around 18 minutes, it feels like little vignettes from somebody lost in the world. This feels like the state of society right now, locked away; it’s somewhat unnerving, but I love it for that.

In saying that, I think i'm becoming the 'old man' that sits on the lawn and yells at things. I know i'm not actually becoming an old man, for Christ Sake, i'm barely 19! What I mean is more towards what I feel towards these kind of projects. Listening to these types of albums kind of reflect a deep personal fear that I may have: loosing touch with what is happening in the world. Call this record underground/mainstream/the next best thing, but when it comes to my personal ... read more
