Off! makes up for its self-serving petulance with sharp songwriting and pure, crusty potency.
OFF! is the godfather of hardcore punk churning out another stellar example of the genre at its peak, an album that kicks ass musically, confronts the listener lyrically, and then kicks ass again.
It’s a bolshie, unapologetic barrage of electroshock rock’n’roll that’s as snarlingly pissed off as it is inanely entertaining.
The band’s first proper album doesn’t have quite the same impact as The Four EPs, but only because we’re already been hit over the head with that particular skateboard.
The "holy SHIT" surprise of those First Four EPs is somewhat dulled by the nagging feeling that we've heard a lot of this before.
The guitar work is absolutely ferocious from beginning to end, the rhythm section’s diversity and tightness reveals itself with increasing listens, and OFF! never rely on speed or volume to make up for lack of a guitar line or on profanity for lack of a lyric.
This album, and band, succeeds because it doesn’t claim to be any more than it is, and while its ambitions may be low, its execution is brilliant and its insights – even if it doesn’t probe them – are sharp all the way through.
The songs tend to be better if they have more space to breathe, a fact that the band is either unfazed by or unaware of.
This is basically the exact same rodeo as "First Four EPs," but it's still fire! I might do one more record by these guys eventually, but I'm only interested because of the goat Steven Shane Macdonald 😅 so I probably won't listen to their most recent record (actually I change my mind yes I will, anyways) I like the album cover better on this one too!
